The Phlox Purple Flame, 'Phlox paniculata', is an ideal ground cover with masses of tiny dark purple flowers with a white center and a thick mat of foliage. It is a dwarf garden phlox cultivar which typically grows in an upright clump to only 12-16" tall. ‘Purple Flame’ is a new variety with variegated foliage and a pinkish tinge near the tips or the leaves.
Blooming from April to May, this garden phlox is a definite addition to any perennial garden. ‘Purple Flame’ needs to be planted in a full sun area in well-drained soil. Because of its size it works well in containers or window boxes.
Use ‘Purple Flame’ in rock gardens, as a spread over curbs and short retaining walls, or in difficult edges of dry streambeds.
The best thing about ‘Purple Flame’ is that it combines well with other perennials and provides long summer bloom. If you are wishing for birds to visit your yard, garden phlox is attractive to hummingbirds and is a good selection for inclusion in a bird garden.
