Tomato Plants

Tomato plants are the cornerstone of any vegetable garden, and Nature Hills ships live tomato plants for sale ready to transplant straight into your beds or containers. No seed-starting, no germination guesswork. Just strong, established plants ready to set fruit in the same growing season you buy them.

The Tomato Varieties We Grow

Every tomato variety has a job. We focus on tomatoes that earn their space in your garden by producing reliably, resisting disease, and tasting like a tomato should.

  • Beefsteak Tomatoes, large, meaty slicing tomatoes that crown a sandwich. The Beefmaster Tomato Plant is our flagship beefsteak, producing massive 1 to 2 pound fruits with thick juicy flesh and excellent disease resistance.
  • Paste Tomatoes, meaty, low-seed tomatoes built for sauces, canning, and cooking. The La Roma Tomato Plant is our go-to paste variety. It is determinate, so it sets a heavy crop over a concentrated window, perfect for batch canning.

How To Grow Tomato Plants

  • Sun: Full sun, 6 to 8 hours minimum. More sun means more fruit.
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained soil amended with compost. Tomatoes are heavy feeders and reward fertile beds.
  • Spacing: 24 to 36 inches between plants. Determinate types can go closer, indeterminate types need room to climb.
  • Support: Stake or cage at planting time. Tomatoes set down deep root systems and disturbing them later sets the plant back.
  • Water: Deep watering 1 to 2 times per week. Mulch heavily to keep soil moisture even and prevent splash-up that spreads disease.
  • Feed: Balanced fertilizer at planting, then switch to a higher-potassium formula once flowering begins.

Determinate Vs. Indeterminate: Which Tomato Is Right For You?

Determinate tomatoes are the right pick if you want to can or preserve, if you garden in containers, or if you have a small space. The plants stay compact, the fruit ripens in a tight window, and you can process a season's harvest in one or two weekends.

Indeterminate tomatoes are the right pick if you want steady fresh tomatoes all season for slicing, salads, and snacking. They take more support and more space, but they reward you with months of harvest.

Pairs Well With

Tomatoes are heavy feeders and benefit from companion planting. Try planting them alongside herbs like basil and oregano. Basil is famously claimed to improve tomato flavor when grown nearby, and both crops appreciate the same sun, soil, and water schedule.
