For gorgeous texture and motion in your garden while adding graceful privacy and screening, look no further than Maiden Grass!

Also known as Chinese Silver Grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus'), this is a tall, graceful, clumping ornamental grass. The slender, weeping, arching leaves are silvery-green and turn golden bronze in fall.

A large version of the classic variety of Miscanthus, Maiden Grass has fantastic silvery, striped foliage and white plumes that are showy all winter long! Due to the silver stripe that runs up the middle of the sword-like green leaves, these just sparkle and glimmer in the sun as they wave gently in the slightest breeze.

The tall flowers are white, fan-shaped plumes that soar above the foliage. After the first frost, the foliage turns a golden-yellow, fading to a grassy tan, sometimes bronzy in warmer areas.

Those white plumes turn the same tans and orangy-bronzy hues in fall, making them lovely as fresh or dried decor in your home! Use those showy seed heads fresh or after they've dried on the plant for bouquets and decoration. You can, of course, leave these wonderful ornaments on the plant and proved impressive winter interest for your landscape.

The hardiness, the fine foliage and the spectacular fall colors have made 'Gracillimus' a favorite and very popular for years!

How to Use Maiden Grass In The Landscape

Tolerating some salt, drought and wet winter soil, Maiden Grass is impressively hardy, tolerant and adaptable! These are all the qualities you should look for in an ornamental plant and Maiden Grass has them in abundance!

A graceful accent in the back of borders, Miscanthus also works as an informal privacy screen or fast-growing hedge. These are lovely additions to informal cottage gardens and easy-care urban plantings regardless if you're a landlocked or coastal gardener!

With a hefty mature size of 5-6 feet in height and 3-4 feet in width, just one of these ornamental grasses becomes an impressively statured specimen plant. Miscanthus are instant focal-points among other shrubs and evergreens, making any planting bed look like you hired a garden designer.

The fine-textured clumps create wonderful accents and backdrops when added to the mixed-shrub beds. They anchor perennial borders and soften corners in foundation plantings. The graceful motion and textures complement the informal cottage garden beautifully.

'Gracillimus' has a lovely arching shape and looks fabulous in the landscape as a long row for screening or a nice mass planting of textured foliage; also looking great near a pond!

These waving fronds add immense color, texture, sound and motion to the garden! The calming Zen provided by softly rustling grasses, plus the mesmerizing swaying of the plumes, are always lovely additions to your private spaces. In fact, these great plants are fast to create privacy and 'garden rooms' for Yoga area, hammock, reading nook, firepits and entertaining!

Naturalizing and prairie plantings receive amazing boosts in designer appeal when Miscanthus is planted en masse. Plus providing loads of screening and cover for wildlife and birds!

#ProPlantTips For Care

Deer and rabbits rarely bother this plant plus, this Miscanthus is highly pest and disease-free!

Doing its very best in full sun, Maiden Grass also tolerates some shade but won't be anywhere as strong and upright. Possibly even just falling flat.

That full sunlight also dramatically highlights, and makes these wonderful plants just glow! Imagine seeing the rising or setting sun backlight these fronds from behind!

Miscanthus requires well-drained soil but becomes highly drought tolerant once established. Easy-to-grow, Maiden Grass is cold hardy in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9.

A warm-season grass like this will not start growing until the soil temperature warms up so have a bit of patience. Don't overwater or keep the soil too wet until it needs additional moisture.

Cut back the previous year's growth before growth starts to appear in early spring. Be sure to clean out the centers of the clump when pruning to remove built-up leaves and debris. This will prevent your crowns from thinning out and keep your Grasses full!
