The broadleaf evergreen leaves are dark, glossy olive on the top and soft brown on their underside, remaining a constant presence all year round in your landscape! In spring the entire tree becomes festooned in enormous white satellites that smell divine! The bumblebees, butterflies, and other pollinators will agree and relish in the nectar and pollen they offer! Fall brings reddish berry-like seedpods that the birds adore!

Growing into a tall, oval presence up to 80 feet in height and 40 feet in width, these natives of the Southeastern US have strong stems and branches. The gray smooth bark and strong lumber were regarded for making furniture! Growing throughout USDA planting zones 6 to 10, these trees shrug off heat, sun, humidity, pests, and disease!

Planting and Application:

These are supremely ornamental lawn trees, adding their delightful year-round presence to your landscape while boosting curb appeal! Everyone on the block will adore these flowering trees when in bloom! But only you and your pollinators and Hummingbirds will be able to enjoy their sweet lemony scent! This fragrance of the 8-10 inch wide flowers is another reason to plant the Southern Magnolia as a backyard shade tree, casting cooling relief, perfuming your seating areas and glowing as it towers over the Moon Garden! Magnolia trees need sun, both for the most blooms and for the strongest growth. Plant in a well-drained slightly acidic soil with regular moisture access, especially for their first year in the ground. In its wild setting, it grows in coastal wetlands in acidic loamy soils. For the best performance, give it an acid fertilizer like Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic and Natural Premium Fertilizer in spring and mid-summer to maintain low soil pH.

Once established, just give your Magnolia a regular schedule of supplemental water, if rainfall isn't sufficient. This is especially important when the plants are young. Provide 3-4 inches of arborist mulch to hold in soil moisture more consistently and insulate the roots.

Prune your tree after those magnificent flowers have faded, removing crossing limbs and opening the interior to sunlight penetration and air circulation. Magnolias are evergreens that keep their leaves all year round, but old leaves do turn yellow and drop to make room for fresh new leaves.

Small but nice

I bought the 2 to 3 foot southern magnolia. Arrived in good shape, very impressed with the packaging. I got what I ordered. In the ground & it was just above my yard stick. Not sure how fast they grow but I'm guessing it will be a while before I have the classic large stately southern magnolia..

I'm back to buy another one for the other back corner of my yard. I lost a fair amount of leaves on the Southern Magnolia I bought last year but I asked someone down the street who has a full grown mature magnolia & they say that is normal.
