Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant in full sun, ensuring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. While it can survive in partial shade, you will see fewer flower spikes and the signature cascading habit will become leggy and sparse.
  • Soil: This shrub requires excellent drainage and thrives in loose, loamy soil. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised mound or add organic compost to the planting hole to prevent "wet feet," which can cause root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, provide 1 inch of water per week to help the roots settle into their new home. Once established, this Butterfly Bush is quite drought tolerant, though consistent moisture leads to larger and more vibrant nectar-filled blooms. If the soil stays bone-dry for too long, the plant may drop lower leaves or produce smaller flower clusters as a stress response.

Pruning Tips

Pink Cascade blooms on new wood, so the best time to prune is in early spring just as new growth begins to emerge. Cut the entire plant back to about 12 inches above the ground to encourage a flush of vigorous stems and a tidy, fountain-like shape. Think of this as a "reset button" that ensures you get the maximum amount of flowers, since more new branches mean more places for blooms to form.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as the first green leaves appear. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this encourages tender green growth that can be easily damaged by the first frost. A single application of a general-purpose garden food is usually enough to fuel a full season of heavy flowering.

Make an easy splash in the second half of the growing season! You'll fall in love with the vibrant apple blossom-pink, elongated pink flowers that cascade out and down dripping with color. Enjoy oversized blooms summer and fall from the high-performance Pink Cascade Butterfly Bush (Buddleja x 'Pink Cascade')!

Part of the esteemed Cascade collection, this weeping wonder brings a delightfully romantic look to your summer landscape. Each fragrant, 10-inch pink bloom is composed of hundreds of tiny flowers. The large blooms point down and out...truly cascading from the top to the bottom of this lush shrub with its upright habit.

Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 10, handling a wide range of heat, sun, soil types, and climate conditions! Growing into a weeping and airy 5 feet in height and 5-6 feet in width.

Planting and Application:

Of course, you can also simply trim the enormous blooms before they finish fading for a last hurrah as a cut flower indoors. Your guests will think you are an expert arranger with their huge flower power. Include some of the minty-green, aromatic leaves for filler. The overall cool tones make an excellent contrasting combination with the flowers in the vase and on the bush, too!

It's large enough to grace the backdrop of a border, and dense enough to pull double duty as an effective screening plant. Pot up in large planters around sunny patios, or add these cascading gems to pretty urns on your front entry! Mix and match with other Cascade Butterfly Bushes like Lavender Cascade or Grand Cascade!

Pink Cascade Butterfly Bush makes a memorable focal point in either front or backyard plantings. Add their showy charm to an integrated Cottage border, Rock Garden, or Perennial Garden! Their xeric nature allows these beauties to handle sun, heat, and poor dry soil. They are even listed on Firewise Landscaping state lists!

These are must-haves for the Pollinator Border! Nature Hills works so hard to grow and sell a huge catalog of flowering plants to support beneficial insects, butterflies, and pollinators! No matter how you use it, the local beneficial insects and hummingbirds will visit faithfully!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant your Butterfly Bush in full sun with at least six hours of direct sunlight a day for the most blooms and best health. They need well-drained soil and water regularly their first year, but then these waterwise plants appreciate supplemental moisture and a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch over the root system.

Deadhead the spent blooms for a longer-lasting performance and rebloom until fall. In spring, cut your plants back to about a foot in colder climates because these shrubs may die back to the ground and act like Perennials. Warmer climates can enjoy Buddleia as woody shrubs that just need some early spring trimming.

  • Great in Full Sun & Tolerates Heat
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
  • Easy to Grow & Rarely Damaged by Deer
  • Blooms on New Wood - Prune Early Spring
