The wild Carolina Rose Bush (Rosa carolina) flowers throughout most of the western half of the United States as a native flowering shrub! Thriving throughout a varied range of average to dry soils, prairies, woodlands, and savannas throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9.

Fluttering and scented pink blossoms smother these prolific flowering shrubs! This wild Rose forms rounded clumps and thorny thickets full of lush green foliage that looks great even in harsh conditions. It features a heavy bloom from May to June depending on where growing.

Large-scale flowering shrubs, the Carolina Rose is a deciduous bush that can grow 4-6 feet tall and forms thickets 6-8 feet wide. Not much will want to tangle with the thorns of these shrubs except for the pollinators that will flock to the flowers, and then songbirds that seek out nesting sites and food from the Rosehips that form later in the season.

Planting and Application:

The single pink blossoms develop into red Rosehips that are showy in the autumn and winter. Snip a few stems of either in flower arrangements or use the Rosehips in dried décor. The hips can even be dried and used in tea and jam. Or leave them on the shrub for the birds and winter interest! Highly adaptable, these shrubs tolerate moist soils along waterways or even more xeric open and sunny locations.

These thorned landscape deterrents are ideal for blocking access in a pretty manner, keeping out unwanted trespassers and providing wildlife a place to roost. Songbirds nest in the safety of these thicket-forming shrubs creating gorgeous dual-purpose hedges and shelterbelts. Use as native plantings, in rows as flowering backdrops, sun-drenched foundation shrubs, and sunny hedges.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Grown on its own root, the Carolina Wild Rose is hardy and disease-resistant in full sun and a location with good air circulation. This resilient native thrives in a wide range of soil types as long as they're well-drained. Provide moderate regular water, but once established, Wild Roses can be quite drought-tolerant or even moist soils along ponds and water features. In the fall, get your Rose bushes ready for winter by mounding clean leaves or mulch over the crown, but do not prune Roses in the early spring while un-wintering them before new growth emerges. Every few years, you can renewal prune these shrubs by removing the oldest, thickest stems.
