Description
The Royal Candles Speedwell Veronica (Veronica spicata 'Royal Candles') is the perfect summer flower for when you need vertical flowers in your landscape! They punctuate the garden and add rhythm and texture and deep purple-blue coloration to garden beds and borders! As your eyes move across the garden, the vertical flowers poking up through the greenery force you to pause and look closer.
Royal Candles Speedwell is super easy to grow and will come back year after year. The "candles" are spikes of deep royal purple that wave above glossy green leaves. They don't get eaten by rabbits or deer, but they do attract butterflies and Hummingbirds in droves.
The flower spikes appear from late spring to mid-summer, and boy do they make great cut flowers, too! Imagine the bouquet you can create. You can deadhead any spent blooms left on the plant, to truly appreciate the dark foliage through the rest of the season (and encourage a few reblooms in the process). Hardy throughout USDA zones 4 to 9, Veronica are space-saving perennials that take up a foot of space in height and width at maturity.
Planting and Application:
There are many uses for this Veronica - in borders, beds, in containers, or as a groundcover. It will be showy all summer and attract loads of pollinators, hummingbirds, and many types of bees. So include it in a pollinator garden and feed the bees!
Veronica are as lovely as vertical filler and focal points in the garden bed and border as they are in the vase and in container gardens! Planters on sunny porches and patios gain loads of appeal and height, bouquets get a pop of upright color, and Cottage gardens, Rock Gardens, and border gardens gain edging, thrillers, and unique blooms. Turn any garden into a cut flower garden with a few groupings or a winding row of Royal Candles tall spires!

#ProPlantTips For Care
These easy-to-grow plants just prefer full sun and well-drained soil that gets plenty of water during the growing season to stay perfectly happy. Speedwell is an herbaceous perennial and appreciates ample moisture throughout the growing season to keep blooming despite the heat. Help further by topping off the root system with 3-4 inches of arborist mulch for moisture retention and insulation. Deadhead the blooms as soon as they fade to encourage new blooms to form. In late autumn, once the foliage dies back after frost, you can prune the mound to remove excess debris.
- Blooms Best in Full Sun
- Well-Drained Enriched Soil
- Regular Moisture Needs
- Deadhead For Rebloom & Prune Mounds Late Autumn
- Seldom Damaged By Deer or Rabbits
