Large trees are primarily sought after for the shade qualities they possess. Large landscape trees can become the focal point in a large yard and they can dominate the view. Large yards can handle large trees whereas smaller yards may look overwhelmed and appear smaller than they really are. Large trees can increase the value of a home property not only because of the appearance but also for shade they provide. The value comes from the many years it takes to grow to a size of 50 to 70 feet. The fall colors of large trees can positively captivate the eye in the autumn season.

The first step in choosing a large tree is to know the tree’s characteristics, mature size, soil requirements, and the drainage of the planting site. Large trees usually have extensive root systems that will reach out to twice the size of the trees canopy. Large trees planted on the south and east sides of a house can reduce cooling costs in the summer. Some large shade trees are denser than others. If planting is desired under a large tree try to use a tree that provides filtered shade and not dense shade. There is a good selection of shade, flowering, fast growing, seed producing, deciduous, and evergreen trees that fit the large tree category.
