Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 6-8
Need a Barberry that really does have it all? Deeply colorful glossy foliage, bright flowers, a neat and useful habit, and absolutely no worries about invasiveness? The Proven Winners® sweet little Sunjoy Todo® Barberry PP#29,504 (Berberis x 'NCBX1') is a dramatically colorful shrub that is also sterile!
The golden spring blooms attract their fair share of bees and other beneficial insects, they will form red berries in the fall that the birds eagerly snap up! However, there is no worry as the berries contain no seed so they will not spread or be invasive!
The high-gloss, deep purple to near-black foliage color-fast in the hot summer sun but does transform into a gorgeous fall hue! Sunjoy Todo® Barberry is also unlike other Barberries in that it is semi-evergreen in warmer climates! But even where it's not evergreen, this little powerhouse provides year-round interest with its round, mounding form.
Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 6 to 8, this small shrub makes a huge impact on your garden beds and borders. It only grows 18-24 inches tall and wide, but visually, it draws you in with its rich dark burgundy color!
Landscape Application:
Excellent border specimens and mid-sized property division shrubs, use a row of Todo® as a low hedge, screen, or backdrop! Try adding their dark foliage interspersed throughout a mixed shrub border for dots of deep color! Sunjoy Todo® looks great with the green needles of true evergreens or with the chartreuse and bright greens of other shrubs and perennials. The color is so deep that, honestly, it makes anything around it seem brighter!
Berberis is beautiful, but it does have a bite! Don't worry, On the contrary, it is one of its best attributes! Think of them as showy landscape accents that provide security! Plant a few with larger Barberry or with Rugosa Roses for an impenetrable barrier around your pool, or a grouping just under a first-story window for an extra layer of security! They won't block your view and give you peace of mind!
A great walkway and edging plant, the thorns will keep foot traffic on the straight and narrow! Just space them a bit away from the path to prevent snagged clothing. Line your property edges with a pokey screening fence that's less expensive and lower maintenance than a hardscape, and relax knowing few will want to tangle with those sharp deterrents!
Of course, the vibrant depth of color is a must-have for mass plantings! Easy-care and easy to grow, Barberries are fantastically deer-resistant and tolerate urban pollution! This is a true 'plant-it-and-forget-it' shrub that will add both warmth and mystery to your landscape!

- Rich Dark Purple/Burgundy Foliage That's Nearly Black!
- High-Gloss Fine-Textured Leaves

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This Barberry will have the best deep coloration in the full sun but in hotter climates, these shrubs will appreciate a bit of afternoon shade. Adaptable to any kind of well-drained soil, plant your shrubs with Nature Hills Root Booster for life-long symbiotic root support! For best results, choose a slightly acidic location and set up a consistent watering schedule for new plants by using the Finger Test to make sure you don't let new installations dry out. However, once established, Barberries are quite drought-tolerant! Provide a 3-4 inch layer of arborist pine bark mulch to protect the top of the roots and help maintain the slightly acidic environment. You can let this tidy shrub grow naturally, or prune or shear after flowering in the spring since Barberry bloom on old wood.
Even though the berries are considered sterile, it is true that some Barberry cultivars are invasive in some areas, but they may not be invasive in all areas. Sunjoy Todo® is unique in that it produces red berries but they contain no seed so they are simply not invasive. They still may be limited in your state due to other reasons. Nature Hills has taken the initiative to develop our own compliance company called Plant Sentry™ so that you will not be able to even purchase a plant that your state has prohibited because of invasiveness, insects, or disease. Plants may be available on our website, but if your state prohibits that plant from being shipped to you, the sale will not go through.
