Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Aim for 4 to 6 hours of morning sun with dappled shade during the hottest part of the afternoon. Full shade leads to sparse blooming and lanky growth while too much harsh sun can scorch the evergreen leaves.
  • Soil: These plants require acidic soil that is rich in organic material and drains away water quickly. If you have heavy clay, plant them in a raised mound to keep the roots above the water line or mix in plenty of composted pine bark.

Watering Requirements

Keep the root ball consistently moist for the first year to help the plant establish a strong foundation. Mature azaleas have shallow roots that dry out fast, so provide a deep soaking once a week during summer dry spells. If you let the soil get too dry, the plant will experience stress and set fewer flower buds for the following year.

Pruning Tips

Always prune your Stewartstonian Azalea immediately after the spring flowers fade because it sets its buds on old wood. Think of this like a post-bloom haircut where you trim back long branches to maintain a tidy, mounded shape. Waiting until late summer or fall will unfortunately cut off next year's flower show before it even begins.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply an organic fertilizer designed for acid-loving plants in early spring just as new growth begins to emerge. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers after mid-summer because this forces soft new growth. This late season growth will not have enough time to harden off and can be easily damaged when the first frost arrives.
