Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Aim for at least 6 hours of direct sun daily to get the most vibrant pink berries. While this shrub tolerates partial shade, the tradeoff is usually fewer blooms and a sparser berry display in autumn.
  • Soil: These plants are incredibly adaptable and will tolerate anything from clay to sandy loam. If your soil is heavy and drains poorly, mix in some organic compost at planting to prevent the roots from sitting in standing water.

Watering Requirements

Focus on keeping the soil consistently moist (but not soggy) for the first year while the root system establishes itself. Once established, this snowberry is quite drought tolerant, though inconsistent watering during high heat can cause the berries to shrivel or the leaves to drop prematurely.

Pruning Tips

Sweet Sensation blooms on new wood, so you should prune it in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Treat it like a renewal project by cutting the oldest, thickest stems all the way to the ground and lightly shaping the rest. This encourages fresh, vigorous stems that will produce the heaviest clusters of fruit.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer (like a 10-10-10) once in early spring as the plant wakes up. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers or feeding late in the summer, as this pushes soft, leafy growth that attracts pests and won't have time to harden off before winter.

First Editions® Sweet™ Sensation (Symphoricarpos x doorenbosii 'Kolmagics') is dwarf Snowberry bush that provides year-round interest. But most of all, plenty of those fat, pink berries that look like mauvy pearls all autumn and persist into the winter months!

A dwarf variety of an old favorite, this smaller version of the traditional Snowberry is a must-have for any yard. Resplendent in pink summer flowers and fall berries, your Sweet™ Sensation features a deeper pink shade than some other varieties.

The diminutive, silver-green foliage sets off the gracefully arching branches to perfection, and the dramatic pink blossoms are a spicy addition to the vibrant shades of summer! Even when the flowers drop, the decorative pink berries will remain to liven up the dull shades of fall and winter!

Planting and Application:

Sweet™ is large enough to stand out without being too big for most garden spaces. Growing 3-4 feet tall and wide, plant one as a focal point in your yard or several to create an eye-catching attraction year-round!

Snowberry are typically white, but this cultivar is a pink-fruited form! The berries aren't edible by humans, but your wildlife will love them, and the summer blooms will be a draw for butterflies and other pollinators. But the naturalizing thicket-forming nature is a shelter and nesting boon for songbirds!

Snip the berries for bouquets, but leave some for your local wildlife and the dramatic winter interest!

Sweet™ Sensation is also ideal for container plantings and sun-to-shaded planters around your porch, patio, or even a balcony! The smaller size has a gorgeous berry color for Cottage gardens, smaller properties, low hedges, and as bright pops of color to brighten a mixed-shrub hedge!

  • Dainty Pink Blooms For Pollinators
  • Silvery Green Foliage
  • Outstanding Pink Pearl-Like Fall Berries
  • Mounded Rounded Dwarf Form
  • Container Plants, Low Hedges, Accents & Wildlife Shrubs

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Snowberry need full sun in cooler growing zones of 4 to 8, but appreciate afternoon shade in hotter climates. Plant these deciduous shrubs in well-drained soil with regular moisture throughout the hotter months. Top-dress your shrub's root system with 3-4 inches of arborist mulch to keep them hydrated and insulated.

These shrubs bloom (and therefore fruit) on new growth, so prune in the early spring before new growth begins each year. Renewal pruning is another great way to keep your shrub growing vigorously and fruiting best. Remove the oldest stems out at the ground every 3-5 years to keep them spiffy!

  • Full Sun & Handles Afternoon Shade
  • Almost Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Higher Moisture
  • Prune Early Spring Before Growth Starts
  • Fairly Deer Resistant

Choose a dwarf Snowberry with year-round interest! All in all, your own First Editions® Sweet™ Sensation Snowberry bush is a must-have for any landscape where dramatic, long-lasting color is desired! Order now at Nature Hills Nursery!
