Stunning pink blooms on a new Rhododendron variety from the University of Helsinki, Finland, the Rhododendron Haaga (Rhododendron x 'Haaga'), on a hardy, dwarf form! The large groups of showy pink flowers appear even on young plants. For the remainder of the year, the Haaga is a dense broad-leaved evergreen shrub and it is a highly valued, spring-flowering landscape ornamental.

Producing frilly, incredibly showy, dark-pink flowers which contrast nicely with the dark green, coarse foliage that is glossy and remains handsome year-round! The Haaga will begin to bloom in May when hoards of bees, butterflies, and Hummingbirds seek out this amazing nectar resource.

Haaga Rhododendron is an open multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its relatively coarse texture can be used to stand it apart from other landscape plants with finer foliage. Hardy down to USDA growing zone 4 to 8, these mid-sized broad-leaved evergreens grow 3-4 feet in height and width! Loving shadier locations and moist soil, these are easy-to-grow evergreen flowering shrubs!

Planting and Application:

Haaga Rhododendron adds an amazing designer touch to the smaller, urban landscape, perfectly sized as an accent hedge or screen. Year-round, vibrant hues are perfect for foundation plantings, and a 4-season backdrop for smaller shrubs and perennials. Your Azalea creates an instant focal point to any landscape and works in any style garden. Haaga looks great in large tubs or planters beside a doorway or your patio, as a beautiful specimen shrub, or when planted in a formal row along a walkway for privacy.

Haaga is perfect for those cool, moist sites on the edges of woods or woodland gardens where they get part shade. Add drama and luminance to the part-shade garden and pairs nicely with absolutely any other color. The blooms are wonderfully set off against a backdrop of deep-green foliage as Haaga forms a strong, superior, upright plant!

#ProPlantTips For Care

Haaga Rhododendron loves part shade and dappled sun areas and appreciates afternoon cover in the warmer growing zones. A bit fussy about soil conditions, these need rich, slightly acidic, cooler, moist soils with a nice layer of mulch over the root system to keep them cooler and hold in more moisture. This plant needs excellent drainage and a peat moss soil additive. The roots will rot in poorly drained soil.

Haaga doesn't do well in windy sites so protect young plants from cold, drying winter winds. If pruning would be required, trim only right after the flowers are done in spring, to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers! Only prune flowering broad-leaved evergreen shrubs immediately after the flowers fade to avoid removing next year's spring display!

  • Partial Shade Prefered
  • Prefers Slightly Acidic Soil
  • Enriched Well-Drained Organic Soil
  • Regular Moisture & Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Cold Hardy

You'll adore this new variety of cold-hardy Haaga Rhododendron as much as we do here at Nature Hills! For amazing pink blooms and dwarf versatility, you'll want to be the first one on your block to have this lovely plant, so call right away to order before Haaga sells out!

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to plant an Azalea bush?

Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.

How big does an Azalea bush get?

Haaga Rhododendrons can reach around 3-4 feet tall and wide in optimal conditions.

Are Azalea bushes low maintenance?

Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.

What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?

All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
