Great plant and service!!!

Great plant and service after the sale. I ordered the Stella cherry tree and it arrived damaged from shipping. They replaced the tree with a new one within a week or so and I am very happy. Thank you nature hills nursery!!!

Shipping damage is never the experience we want you to have, Adam, and we are glad the team was able to get a healthy tree to you quickly. Stella cherry is a great choice, a reliable producer with sweet fruit that does well in a lot of climates. Give it a good deep watering as it settles in and it should take off nicely. Thanks for giving us the chance to make it right.

Absolutely amazing product and service

I ordered the Stella Cherry Tree. Upon arrival it had several broken limbs (most likely during shipping). I contacted them through email and within a week of emailing them they sent me a new tree as a replacement. I could not be happier, and I highly recommend going with Nature Hills Nursery for all your planting needs. Thank you Nature Hills Nursery!!!

Broken limbs on arrival is genuinely frustrating, and we are glad the team was able to get a healthy tree out to you quickly. Stella Cherry is a great pick, by the way. It tends to establish well and rewards patience with heavy crops once it settles in. Thanks for the recommendation, Adam, and enjoy the harvest when it comes.

Very happy thank

Very happy thank you

Hi Daniel, Thank you so much for the wonderful review! We are delighted to hear you're happy with your Stella Cherry tree.
Here's a helpful tip: Stella cherries produce the best fruit when they get full sun and consistent moisture, especially during fruit development. A layer of mulch around the base helps keep the roots cool and moist, but keep it pulled back a few inches from the trunk to prevent rot. Amazing Packaging!

The tree arrived in a very tall box, in a pot, and in great shape. I had it in the ground within a day. It was a bit wilted, as expected, for a couple of days but has now perked right up and looks terrific.

Hi Robert, Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to leave a review! We are thrilled to hear that you are pleased with the packaging and the condition of your Stella Cherry Tree! We do strive to ensure our products reach your doorstep safe & sound! Thanks again - Nature Hills Customer Support

Wont know until next spring

Wont really know wether this tree is ok or not as the tree came to me with yellowed leaves which were falling off and i was tempted to send it back. So far, there are new green leaves on 2 of the branches, 2 groupings on one and 2 on another. The existing 3-4 branches show no growth but are plyable and not brittle. Will have to wait until spring to see if the plant survives the winter in this condition. There is still a few months of growth time before our winter so hopefully some more growth will happen and the plant will be well exstablished

Hi Matthew,

Thank you so much for sharing your detailed update on the tree’s condition. We sincerely appreciate your patience and thoughtful observations during this critical establishment phase. It’s encouraging to hear there are green leaves emerging on some branches and that the flexible branches aren’t brittle—these are promising signs your tree is adjusting.

As you’ve rightly noted, spring will be a key time to evaluate its overall health. Meanwhile, continuing to provide consistent watering, mulching to regulate soil temperature, and sheltering it from extreme conditions can promote strong root development before winter. If you’d like, we’re happy to recommend specific care tips tailored to your tree species or seasonal guide materials to support its health during the colder months.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you notice any significant changes or have questions — we’re here to support your tree through every stage. Wishing you a rewarding growing season ahead!

Stella Cherry in arid New Mexico

The tree came in a great shape and is doing fine after planting although the weather in New Mexico is getting colder overnight. New leaves came out and thrive even in mid-September. I am really happy with the purchase, the tree itself and the price. Hope the tree will show in its full glory next spring.

Hello Dragan,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Stella Cherry tree! We're delighted to hear it arrived in great shape and is thriving despite New Mexico’s cooler overnight temperatures. It’s wonderful that the new leaves are coming out strong even in mid-September—that’s an excellent sign of a healthy and well-established tree!

As you await the full beauty of your tree’s spring flourish, we recommend mulching around the base to help protect the roots from fluctuating temperatures and conserve moisture during the drier months. Also, if you haven’t already, lightly pruning any damaged branches can support sturdier growth next season.

Should you ever have any questions or need tips specific to your climate zone, feel free to reach out anytime. We’re always here to offer advice and help your garden thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many chill hours does the Stella cherry tree require?

  • The Stella cherry tree requires at least 400 chill hours to fruit properly. These are hours below 45°F during winter dormancy. Check your area's average chill hours to ensure this variety will produce fruit reliably in your location.

Is the Stella cherry tree self-fertile or self-pollinating?

  • The Stella cherry tree is self-fruitful, meaning it doesn't need another cherry tree nearby to produce fruit. This self-pollinating variety produces abundant heart-shaped, dark red cherries in mid-summer. While it's excellent for solo planting, it also serves as a great pollinator for other cherry varieties in your orchard.

What are the best planting zones or climates for growing Stella cherries?

  • Stella cherries thrive in USDA zones 5-9 and require at least 400 chill hours to fruit properly. They perform best in full sun locations with well-draining soil. Plant in areas with mild winters but avoid regions with extremely hot, humid summers that can stress the tree.

What rootstock is used for Stella cherry trees, and how does it affect size?

  • Stella cherry trees are typically grafted onto semi-dwarf rootstock, keeping mature height around 12-15 feet. This rootstock provides the compact, upright growth habit that makes Stella ideal for home gardens. Choose a sunny location with good drainage for best fruit production.

What care is needed after planting a Stella cherry tree, like staking and watering?

  • Young Stella cherry trees benefit from staking for the first year and deep weekly watering during establishment. The compact, upright growth habit means minimal staking compared to larger varieties. Water deeply but infrequently once established, and shop at Nature Hills for proper tree stakes and care supplies.

How is a Stella cherry tree shipped, and what should I know about bare-root or potted options?

  • Stella cherry trees are typically shipped as bare-root plants during dormant season or in containers during the growing season. Bare-root shipping occurs in late winter/early spring when trees are dormant, while potted trees can be planted throughout the growing season. Choose bare-root for better root establishment and lower cost, or potted for flexible planting timing.
