The tree is a very nice size and is full of new growth

The tree is a very nice size and is full of new growth. Really looking forward to seeing the flowers.

New growth right out of the box is always a good sign that a tree settled in well during shipping. Genie Magnolia puts on a great show when it blooms, with deep ruby-red flowers that hold their color even in full sun. Thanks for sharing, mae, and enjoy that first bloom season!

Beautiful healthy tree

Beautiful healthy tree. Arrived in great condition. It was packaged great and the soil was still moist. It was 4-5 feet tall as described. I will definitely order from this company again.

Hearing that the Genie Magnolia arrived in good shape and true to size is exactly what we aim for. It's a compact grower with those deep burgundy blooms that really put on a show in spring. Give it a sunny spot and it will reward you for years to come. Thanks for the kind words, Kathern, and we look forward to your next order.

Genie Good

I live on the very north edge of zone 5. I planted my Genie three years ago. First year I thought oh oh. Second year it grew a little and I thought maybe. This is the third year. It took a while to green up. Now it is two foot tall and has maybe 8 sprouts. Growing fast every day. I have eight magnolia trees bushes and I love every one of them.

Hi Jimmy,

Thank you so much for sharing your Genie magnolia journey with us! It’s wonderful to hear about the progress you’ve made out on the edge of zone 5, and how patient you’ve been through the initial developmental stages. Magnolias, especially varieties like the Genie, can sometimes take a little extra time to establish but once they do, they really surge ahead, just as you’re seeing now with those new sprouts.

Your garden sounds absolutely lovely with eight magnolia trees and bushes—they certainly are stunning additions that bring so much charm year-round. If you’d ever like tips on helping your Genie continue to flourish, such as feeding schedules, mulching, or winter protection strategies, we’re here to assist. Winter can be a bit tricky in zones that far north, but ensuring proper mulch and avoiding harsh pruning in cold months can give your trees extra resilience.

We appreciate you trusting us to help provide great plants, and here’s to many more years of watching all your magnolias grow beautifully!

Beautiful Healthy Tree as Advertised

Ordered my magnolia tree 2 days ago and received it today! It is indeed 36-48 inches high with a good 0.5-0.75 inch at least central trunk. Arrived in excellent condition, packed in a nice big box, pot was stapled to the cardboard so no matter which way it was set by shippers, the tree did not move or slide or get broken, not even any leaves were damaged. The pot was bagged and soil was moist. I have bought from all kinds of nurseries from quality to shady and these guys are definitely in the top tier. The Genie wasn't cheap but you get what you pay for, and I am so happy I am ordering another as a wedding gift for another gardener friend.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big does the Genie Magnolia get at maturity in height and width?

  • The Genie Magnolia reaches 10 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide at maturity. This columnar growth habit makes it perfect for narrow spaces, small gardens, or container growing. Plant it where you want dramatic spring color without sacrificing precious yard space.

Will the Genie Magnolia fit in my small garden or yard?

  • Genie Magnolia grows just 10 feet tall with a narrow columnar shape, making it perfect for small spaces. This compact magnolia thrives in zones 5-9 and works beautifully as a front yard specimen or even in large containers. Shop at Nature Hills for this space-saving spring bloomer.

What type of soil does the Genie Magnolia prefer, like acidic or well-drained?

  • Genie Magnolia thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil with good organic content. Like most magnolias, it prefers consistent moisture but won't tolerate waterlogged conditions. Plant in zones 5-9 and amend heavy clay soils with compost for best results.

How do I prune the Genie Magnolia to maintain its shape?

  • Genie Magnolia's natural columnar form requires minimal pruning to maintain its 10-foot narrow shape. Prune immediately after spring flowering ends to avoid removing next year's buds. Remove only dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and avoid heavy pruning since magnolias heal slowly.

Is the Genie Magnolia cold hardy in zone 5 winters?

  • Yes, Genie Magnolia is cold hardy in zone 5 winters and was specifically bred for reliable flowering even when late spring frosts hit. This hardy magnolia thrives in USDA zones 5-9. Shop at Nature Hills for this Gold Medal winner that delivers consistent spring blooms in challenging climates.

Can the Genie Magnolia tolerate heat and drought once established?

  • The Genie Magnolia is heat tolerant throughout USDA zones 5-9, but like most magnolias, it prefers consistent moisture rather than drought conditions. Once established, it can handle some dry periods but performs best with regular watering during hot summers. Mulch around the base and provide supplemental water during extended dry spells for optimal flowering.

How is the Genie Magnolia shipped, and what size do plants arrive in?

  • Genie Magnolia trees are shipped as bare root or potted plants depending on season and availability. Most arrive as young specimens ready for immediate planting in your landscape. Check your specific order for exact sizing details, as plant dimensions vary by growing season and stock availability.

Is the Genie Magnolia resistant to common pests, diseases, or deer?

  • Genie Magnolia has good general disease resistance typical of hybrid magnolias, though it's not specifically marketed as deer resistant. Its urban tolerance suggests resilience against common environmental stresses in zones 5-9. Plant in well-draining soil and provide good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
