I wouldn’t use UPS to deliver trees

I wouldn’t use UPS to deliver trees, when I received my tree, it had been open at the bottom dirt every where, the branches were broke , I only had 2 branches on it. I had bought a tree before this one and it was delivered in one piece nothing broke. I’m having baby this recent tree I just got because of the conditions I received it!

Nice product

Ordered 2 trees and they arrived within the stated timeframe. One of the packages was torn open but there was no damage to the tree. The container was wrapped nicely in a bag keeping all of the still damp soil intact. 3 weeks since their arrival and many leaves have formed and are turning the signature red color, very happy so far.

Seeing those leaves push out and shift to that deep burgundy is one of the best parts of growing Forest Pansy. It sounds like both trees settled in well despite the rough packaging on one end. Thanks for the update at the three-week mark. We hope they put on a great show for you this season and for many years ahead.

Better than the eastern redbud!

I have a neighbor with an eastern redbud that is probably close to 40 feet tall. It's pretty but it's got 3 primary trunks & I worry a strong storm could bring some of the overhanging branches down pretty easily. I have a forest pansy and I LOVE how it keeps a nice, neat rounded form and doesn't get too tall.

Hi Buddy,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Forest Pansy Redbud Tree! We’re delighted to hear you appreciate its neat, rounded form and manageable height. You’re absolutely right—while the classic eastern redbud can become quite tall and sometimes a bit unwieldy with multi-trunk growth, the Forest Pansy’s single-trunk habit and compact shape make it a great option especially for those looking for a tidier, storm-resilient tree.

If you haven’t already, regular pruning to remove any crossing or weak branches will also help keep your tree healthy and strong against storms. Plus, the stunning purple-hued leaves of the Forest Pansy provide a beautiful pop of color throughout the growing season—no wonder you love it!

Feel free to reach out anytime if you want tips on tips on care or pruning to keep your tree thriving.

Hi Buddy,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Forest Pansy Redbud! We’re thrilled to hear that you love how its neat, rounded form fits perfectly into your garden and gives you peace of mind in stormy weather. You’re absolutely right—those single-trunk varieties often provide a bit more structural stability and easier maintenance compared to multi-trunk trees.

If you ever want to keep your Forest Pansy looking its best, regular pruning in late winter can help maintain its shape and prevent overcrowding branches, further minimizing storm risks. We also have some helpful care guides on our site if you’re interested in specific tips for fertilizing or protecting against pests seasonally—just let us know if you’d like links!

Thanks again for your thoughtful review and for choosing Nature Hills. We love hearing how our plants become such a cherished part of your landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

What USDA planting zones is the Forest Pansy Redbud suitable for?

  • Forest Pansy Redbud thrives in USDA zones 4-9, making it suitable for most temperate regions. This hardy native cultivar tolerates both cold winters and warm summers well. Plant in early spring or fall for best establishment.

How large does a Forest Pansy Redbud tree grow at maturity?

  • Forest Pansy Redbud typically reaches 20-30 feet tall and wide at maturity. This compact size makes it perfect for smaller yards where you want spring impact without overwhelming the space. Shop at Nature Hills for healthy specimens that will establish quickly.

Is the Forest Pansy Redbud hardy in cold winters, like zone 6?

  • The Forest Pansy Redbud is a hardy native tree that tolerates cold winters well, including zone 6. As a cultivar of the Eastern Redbud, it shares the same cold hardiness as the species. Plant in a protected location for best results in borderline zones.

How is the Forest Pansy Redbud tree shipped, and will it arrive healthy?

  • Forest Pansy Redbuds ship as bare-root or potted trees depending on season, carefully packaged to protect the smooth gray branches and root system. The hardy native nature of this tree helps it establish quickly after shipping stress. Plant immediately upon arrival and water thoroughly to help your new tree acclimate.

What pruning is needed for a Forest Pansy Redbud, and when should it be done?

  • Forest Pansy Redbud requires minimal pruning and should only be pruned immediately after flowering in late spring. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain the tree's natural shape. Avoid heavy pruning as redbuds heal slowly from cuts.

Is the Forest Pansy Redbud tolerant of poor soil or compaction?

  • Forest Pansy Redbud adapts well to various soil conditions but prefers well-draining soil over compacted areas. As a hardy native tree, it tolerates moderate soil challenges better than many ornamentals. Improve heavy clay or compacted soil with organic matter before planting for best results.

What diseases like verticillium wilt or canker affect Forest Pansy Redbud, and how to prevent them?

  • Forest Pansy Redbuds can be susceptible to verticillium wilt, canker, and leaf spot diseases, especially in poorly drained soils. Prevent issues by planting in well-draining soil with good air circulation. Avoid overhead watering and prune dead branches promptly.
