2 Panicle Hydrangrea Shipped - Only 1 Survived

Nature Hills Nursery shipped 2 Tidbit Panicle Hydrangeas to my home in the same container. One arrived in good condition and the other was essentially dead. I have planted the good Hydrangea, and it seems to be doing well in my garden. I recommend different packaging when shipping 2 plants together. Both plants should have their base pot on the same side of the container with verbiage on the box stating, "This Side Up". The 1 that did not make it was planted with the base pot facing the opposite direction of the other plant. When the box got turned "upside down" in relation to the Hydrangea that arrived in good condition, some of the moist soil in the "bad" plant apparently fell out.

Love, love, love these Summer Crush Bigleaf Hydrangeas!

I received 2 of the #2 pots. Love, love, love these Summer Crush Bigleaf Hydrangeas! So well packaged and so healthy!

Summer Crush is such a reliable performer, and it's great to hear yours arrived in good shape and ready to get established. These do best when you keep the soil consistently moist through their first season, so they can put energy into rooting rather than just surviving. Thanks for sharing, Irish2OH. We hope they reward you with plenty of those deep raspberry blooms.

Communication was terrible, the hydrangea was in terrible shape upon arrival

First of all, the communication with this company has to be the worse I've ever experienced, it took almost 3 months before I got the oakleaf hydrangea( I emailed this company several times regarding the shipping info with no response) not to mention that I ordered a red slipper but got a alice white hydrangea (they charged me for a red slipper tho)
Upon arrival, this plant was in terrible shape, broken new growth, torn leaves and not enough soil around its roots, the box it came in looked like it had been kicked around. Now that the hydrangea has been planted and being cared for it looks much better.
Unfortunately!!!
I won't be ordering from this company ever again

Terrible quality Azure Skies Hydrangeas

Terrible quality Azure Skies Hydrangeas. I ordered #3 pots and they took 3 smaller plants, bundled them together and shoved them into a #3. When you plant them the root systems are not even established so they literally fall apart. As you can see from the photos they are terrible quality. Avoid avoid avoid and go support your local nursery instead.

ZERO Customer Service

I ordered two of these plants. I received one, dying little plant. Emails have gone unanswered. If you call, you get their voicemail and no one will call you back. The website says “use our live chat”, but that does not exist. I got scammed by this company.

So far so good

Arrived in great condition! Did go through a small
Shock and lost a leaf or two but bounced right back. Doing good!

Shipping stress can shake a hydrangea for a bit, so it's good to hear Ruby Snow settled in and started pushing forward. Panicle hydrangeas tend to be pretty resilient once their roots get established. Thanks for the update, Diana, and enjoy the blooms this season!

Disappointed in this one

Disappointed in this one. It looked less than healthy when received, dead leaves in the box and some were deformed and spotty. As a new gardener I thought it was just in shock from travel and planted right away. Watered often and kept removing the damaged leaves. Today I noticed fine webs on the underside, suspect spider mites. Removed bad leaves again and washed the plant. Hoping it survives. Bought 3 different shrubs, this was the largest and most costly unfortunately. Satisfied with my other plants

I Loved these!

I Loved these! I had a pink Victorian home so wanted the White Annabelle Hydrangeas. - After a couple years they were so full and beautiful year after year. They recommended the Root booster for about $15 and added that as well. You will not regret buying these. Beautiful year after year!

White Annabelle against a pink Victorian house sounds like a great pairing. It's really satisfying to hear they've filled in well and come back strong year after year, which is exactly what this variety does when it gets established. The root booster is a solid addition at planting time, and it sounds like it paid off for you. Thanks for sharing the recommendation, Brenda. The Nature Hills Team

Arrived in great condition and seem very happy in the ground

Arrived in great condition and seem very happy in the ground. Two weeks in and doing great.

Climbing hydrangea can take a little time to settle in after planting, so it's great to hear yours hit the ground running. Give it consistent moisture through the first season and it will reward you with strong new growth. Thanks for the update, David.

Worst experience ever

Plant arrived dead. I’ve reached out multiple ways email, chat support, social media(they deleted my comment) it’s been over a week now so might as well just take this as a loss and never order from this company ever again. Google the reviews. Search Facebook. Plenty of negative reviews saying this is a scam. I should have done more research on this company.

Shes Beautiful!

Very first time planting this flower, coming from Houston Texas. I was a little nervous since these plants require a lot of care and water but she has been doing so well!!! I water her twice. Early morning before work (6am) and after sun down (after 7pm). I placed some mulch on the pot so that has been helpful at keeping the soil moist. I was really afraid of drowning her or giving too much water mostly in the early afternoon where the sun was starting to burn through leaves due to me giving it water at 5pm. Shes blossoming beautifully and cannot wait until shes fully open. I also recently purchased her back at the beginning/mid May. Very fast shipping too!

Hi there! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review for our Endless Summer Bigleaf Hydrangea. We're so happy to hear that it's doing well in your care and that you're taking such good care of her. It sounds like you have a great watering routine in place and the mulch is definitely a helpful addition. We hope you continue to enjoy watching her blossom and thank you for choosing our product. Happy gardening!

Beautiful great quality

Beautiful great quality ..

Annabelle is such a reliable performer, and it's great to hear she arrived in good shape. If you want to encourage even fuller blooms next season, a light application of slow-release fertilizer in early spring goes a long way with hydrangeas. Thanks for sharing, Sabina -- happy growing from the Nature Hills team.

Beautiful!

Beautiful, healthy plant received. Great packaging. Will definitely purchase from Nature Hills again.

Healthy hydrangeas right out of the box are always a good sign, and Summer Crush is such a rewarding plant to watch settle in and bloom. Get it established with consistent moisture this first season and it should put on a real show for you. We look forward to your next order, Joan.

Plant arrived quickly and in good condition

Plant arrived quickly and in good condition. It’s doing well in the ground.

Glad to hear the Fire Light Tidbit settled in well after planting. These compact panicle hydrangeas tend to take off once their roots get established, so you should have some great blooms to look forward to. Thanks for the update, Patti!

Annabelle is doing great

Annabelle arrived a bit dehydrated and that worried me. So I pampered her with water, light shade and clipped any leaves that were concerning. After a week or so, she perked up and now has a lot of good new growth. I am glad I treated the hydrangea with patience because that was all it really needed.

Shipping can stress plants more than we'd like, and it's great to hear you gave her the time she needed to settle in. That instinct to water, provide some shade, and trim the struggling leaves is exactly the right approach for a dehydrated hydrangea. Annabelle is a tough plant once she finds her footing, and that new growth is a good sign of things to come. Thanks for sharing what worked.

My hydrangea is growing great so far

My hydrangea is growing great so far.

Vanilla Strawberry is such a rewarding grower once it gets established. Thanks for the quick update, Celeste. Keep an eye out for those big creamy blooms shifting to pink as the season progresses. It really is one of the more striking panicle hydrangeas at peak bloom.

Beautiful plants - healthy -

Beautiful plants - healthy - one looked like it was not gonna make it but it revived nicely

Bobo is a tough little plant, and it's good to hear the one that looked rough found its footing. Panicle hydrangeas have a way of bouncing back once their roots settle in. Enjoy the blooms this season. Thanks for sharing the update!

So pretty!

Hydrangeas had a little trouble adapting but seem to be doing fine now

Transplant stress is pretty common with hydrangeas, so it's good to hear yours have settled in and are finding their footing. Once they're established, Endless Summer tends to be a reliable bloomer season after season. Thanks for the update, Kathleen. The Nature Hills Team

All good so far

It's alive and growing, and extremely thirsty for gallons of water. Mine is a #3 size shrub, tall enough to have a noticeable "front" and "back." The front has a fuller look, more flowering branches, and the back has taller branches at the top and more spindly stems down the side. Probably from its orientation at the nursery. I planted it back to front before I noticed this growing pattern, but I expect after a year or two with pruning, the shape will even out. It already attracts pollinators to the pretty flowers. I've seen tiny native bees and honeybees checking it out, so we're good to go!

Hydrangeas do drink heavily, especially while they're getting established, so it sounds like yours is right on track. The front-to-back asymmetry you noticed is common with nursery-grown shrubs, and your instinct is correct: a couple of seasons of growth and a good late-winter pruning will fill in those spindly sides. The fact that native bees found it so quickly is a great sign, since Invincibelle Lace is genuinely one of the better pollinator hydrangeas we carry. Thanks for the thoughtful observations, Melissa.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are hydrangeas in season?

  • Hydrangeas bloom in early summer and again in late summer, providing flowers throughout the growing season. The Azure Skies™ variety produces large mophead clusters that make excellent long-lasting cut flowers. Plant in spring for blooms the same year.

What USDA hardiness zones is the Azure Skies™ Bigleaf Hydrangea suitable for?

  • Azure Skies™ Bigleaf Hydrangea thrives in USDA zones 6-9. This variety performs best in areas with moderate winters, as bigleaf hydrangeas can suffer dieback in harsh cold. Shop at Nature Hills to ensure you're getting a properly sourced plant for your zone.

How often should I water my Azure Skies™ Bigleaf Hydrangea?

  • Water Azure Skies™ Bigleaf Hydrangea deeply once or twice weekly, providing about 1 inch of water total. These shrubs need consistent moisture, especially during their early and late summer bloom periods. Check soil moisture 2 inches down and water when dry.

Is Azure Skies™ Bigleaf Hydrangea deer resistant?

  • Azure Skies™ Bigleaf Hydrangea is not deer resistant, as deer typically browse on hydrangeas when other food sources are scarce. The large, tender leaves and showy blooms are particularly appealing to deer. Protect your plants with deer repellent spray or fencing, especially during establishment.

Which plants pair well with Azure Skies™ in a garden design?

  • Azure Skies™ pairs beautifully with hostas, ferns, and astilbe in shade gardens, or with lavender and ornamental grasses in mixed borders. Its 5-6 foot height makes it perfect as a backdrop to shorter perennials. Plant with companions that appreciate similar moisture levels for best results when you shop at Nature Hills.

Should I prune Azure Skies™ and if so, when is the best time?

  • Prune Azure Skies™ in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Since this variety blooms on both old and new wood, avoid heavy pruning to preserve early summer flowers. Remove only dead or damaged wood and lightly shape as needed to maintain the 5-6 foot size.

What color are the blooms and do they change color based on soil pH?

  • The blooms change from blue in acidic soil to pink in alkaline soil, giving you control over the flower color. This pH-dependent color shift is a unique feature of bigleaf hydrangeas. Test your soil pH and amend accordingly to achieve your desired bloom color.

What are the most common diseases or pest problems with this variety?

  • Bigleaf hydrangeas are generally pest-resistant but can face aphids, spider mites, and occasional powdery mildew in humid conditions. Their sturdy stems and robust nature make them less susceptible than other hydrangea varieties. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues.
