Nature Hills takes great pride in delivering top-grade plants from our fields, expertly shipped directly to your doorstep. Our quality is unmatched, because our growers are among the best in the business, worldwide, hands down! After all, we understand that landscaping can be a personal quest to create a welcome respite from the busy world using carefully selected plants.

Whether you want a showpiece designed to impress the neighbors, or a fun and funky natural space to unwind, you'll never grow tired of Black Diamond® Purely Purple™ Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia BLACK DIAMOND 'Purely Purple'). This gorgeous, hard-working shrubby variety is one of our top-selling purple flowering Crape Myrtle selections.

It's truly easy-care and so versatile in the landscape. You'll fall in love with the dramatic foliage and masses of gorgeous, clear purple blooms. And the impressive performance of both the dark foliage and flower power will keep your love affair going year after year.

With dark-black foliage and amethyst blooms, Purely Purple™ delivers a stunning visual impact. Your neighbors will be falling all over themselves to ask you about your beautiful hedge!

The striking black foliage is a perfect foil to the purple blooms. This variety doesn't look like any other shrub on the market today. Purely Purple™ also works in any size yard because you can keep it small or grow it out.

Planting and Application:

This is a fabulous selection to line a pool deck or driveway. Let it grow to its full height to screen any undesirable views. Use several of them along any existing fence to easily extend the height for added privacy! The dense branching and foliage are gorgeous as backdrops to your garden beds and borders!

Purely Purple™ Crape Myrtle can be easily held as a smaller plant if desired. For a mid-sized flowering hedge, trim it down to less than a foot from the ground each winter. It will bounce right back and create a three-foot hedge in no time!

Purely Purple™ creates a beautiful shrub form when left to grow naturally. This is the perfect plant to create a tall hedge for brilliant privacy. Or, keep it held to any height with annual pruning. It will grow about 3 or 4 feet a year. To create a solid flowering hedge, plant 3 feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. For a repeating backdrop border, you can expand the planting width to 12 feet apart on center.

You can also grow Purely Purple™ in a large, decorative, outdoor container. Try a pair of them flanking either side of a sunny door or the entrance to a garden path. Pop them here and there, wherever you need a boost of color in your landscape. They also make great strategic screening plants or specimen plants just where you need them around your patio.

Ensure your container is at least 12 wide, and has plenty of drain holes. Use good quality potting soil when planting. Container-grown shrubs will need regular water.

Even gardeners in Zones 3 - 5 need to take a close look at this unusual option for seasonal containers. Talk about a Thriller! In many cases, you can even overwinter them in a protected location!

Limb up your shrub by removing the lower branches to expose the bottom third of the multi-trunked form, creating a spectacular small multi-trunked tree-form look!

  • Dark, Dramatic Foliage & Stems All Season
  • Masses of Vibrant, Purple Blooms from Late Spring to Fall
  • Pollinator & Hummingbird Favorites
  • Fantastic in Containers, Small Gardens, Balconies, Patios or Porches
  • Great for Tall or Low Flowering Hedges & Line Driveways or Fences

#ProPlantTips for Care:

When planting in the ground, look for a location that has full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first season to get the roots established, then extend the period between watering during the second season to encourage deep root development.

Purely Purple™ Crape Myrtle responds well to mulching. Cover the ground to 3 to 4 inches deep to 3 feet outside the canopy to help conserve water and keep roots cool in the hot summer.

All Crape Myrtles flowers on new wood. This is great, as it means that even heavy pruning in late winter or early spring will not affect this season's flowers. Prune to shape at that time, or just to remove twiggy growth to allow good air circulation into the canopy. Deadhead any spent flower clusters as they fade to encourage more blooms during the active growing season.

In Zone 6, this versatile plant will behave as a perennial in the ground and regrow from the roots in the spring. Place a layer of straw around the crown of the plant in the winter to ensure it returns, even in the coldest years. In spring, simply trim off any old winter-damaged wood and prepare for new growth.

Single Stem, Multi Stem, Shrub Form, Oh My!

Before you buy, make sure you know what you’re getting! Single stem, multi stem and shrub forms are different so read a bit about which we’re currently offering below.

Single Stem:

These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching. Sometimes, you will hear a single stem referred to as Tree Form.

Multi Stem:

These are plants with 2 or more stems planted together in the ground in close proximity to form a clump. There are times multi stems are formed by a tree that branches at the soil line with more than one main stem.

Shrub Form:

These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
