Where to Plant

Sunlight: Give this tree at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily to fuel fruit production. While it can survive in partial shade, you will notice significantly fewer blossoms and a skimpier harvest, so prioritize your sunniest spot or a south-facing window if growing indoors.
Soil: Plant in loose, well-draining soil that mimics the sandy loam citrus trees love. If you are working with heavy clay, amend it with compost or plant in a raised bed to prevent root rot; for containers, use a specialized citrus potting mix rather than heavy garden soil to ensure proper drainage.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your tree deeply 2 to 3 times a week to help the root system establish, checking that the top 2 inches of soil are dry before adding more. Once established, these trees are moderately drought-tolerant, but inconsistent watering can cause fruit to split or drop prematurely. If you grow yours in a container, check it daily during summer heat as pots dry out much faster than the ground.

Pruning Tips

Plan to prune in late winter before the spring growth flush begins, as this tree blooms on new wood.
