Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This Hellebore thrives in partial to full shade. While it can handle about two to three hours of early morning sun, too much direct afternoon light will scorch the evergreen foliage. In deeper shade, expect slightly fewer blooms, but the plant will remain much cooler and more vibrant.
  • Soil: Aim for rich, organic soil that feels like a wrung out sponge. If you have heavy clay, mix in some compost or aged bark to improve drainage, as "wet feet" will cause root rot. For sandy soils, adding organic matter helps hold the moisture these plants crave.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Moondance® Lenten Rose twice a week to ensure the roots knit into the surrounding soil. Once established, these plants are remarkably drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during the hot summer months can lead to smaller flower buds the following spring. If the leaves start to flag or droop, it is a clear signal that the plant needs a deep soak.

Pruning Tips

Since these bloom on old wood, you should only prune in late winter or very early spring just as the new flower stalks emerge from the ground. Cut away the tattered, winter worn foliage from the previous year right at the base to make room for the fresh growth. Fertilizer Needs
