Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant this magnolia in a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best flower production. While it can tolerate partial shade, too much shade will result in "leggy" growth and significantly fewer of those signature star-shaped blooms.
  • Soil: These shrubs thrive in rich, slightly acidic, and well-drained soil. If you are dealing with heavy clay soil, amend it with organic matter like compost or peat moss to improve drainage, as Magnolias struggle with "wet feet" and root rot in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, keep the soil consistently moist (but not soggy) to help the root system establish. Once established, the Royal Star is moderately drought-tolerant, but consistent watering during dry spells is crucial for setting buds for the following year. A 3-inch layer of mulch is highly recommended to retain moisture and keep the roots cool.

Pruning Tips

The Royal Star Magnolia blooms on "old wood," meaning the flower buds form during the summer of the previous year. Therefore, you should only prune immediately after it finishes flowering in late spring. Pruning too late in the season or in winter will cut off next spring's flower buds; simply remove dead or crossing branches to maintain air circulation and shape.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a slow-release, acid-loving shrub fertilizer in early spring just before new growth begins to push. Avoid applying high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft new growth that can be damaged by winter frost.
