Shipping
To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Growing Zones 2-8
The smell of Lilacs in spring is absolutely enchanting, and Nature Hills offers many delicious varieties. For the deepest, darkest fragrant purple panicles, you'll want to add this Yankee Doodle Lilac (Syringa vulgaris 'Yankee Doodle') to your cart! This shrub is a profuse bloomer with an upright and spreading growth habit. This pretty shrub will attract songbirds, butterflies and hummingbirds with its beautifully showy blooms.
This vigorous, upright grower features large clusters of the richest, darkest purple flowers. Everyone wants the Yankee Doodle, not only because of the fragrant spring bloom - but also because of the deep, deliciously dark color. This is a very desirable Lilac, and we have a hard time keeping it in stock!
Yankee Doodle is a fragrant variety that's truly an American treasure! One of Father John L. Fiala's many beloved cultivars, Yankee Doodle was developed for its color, performance, and scent. One of the darkest purple Lilacs available! The large panicles of fragrant, single, deep rich purple flower clusters are held aloft above the leaves. That shade of purple is the perfect foil against the richly blue-green heart-shaped leaves.
A priest and educator, Father John was an early participant in the International Lilac Society, where he developed over 50 named cultivars and brought them to market. Every landscape in Zones 2- 8 should have at least one Lilac. Choose the Yankee Doodle for its rich fragrance and color. Yankee Doodle will attract songbirds, butterflies and hummingbirds to further enhance this shrub's beauty. However, it will not attract deer or Japanese Beetles.
Planting and Application:
The fragrance will be absolutely heavenly! The easiest rule of thumb when using Lilacs is to place them where you see and smell them. How about using one as an anchor plant at the corner of the house? By a seating area or entertainment areas? What a delightful way to greet your guests! Better yet, what better way to help you and your family relax and find peace in your own outdoor garden rooms?
Yankee Doodle will be beautiful as an accent, or foundation plant, and adds beauty around patios or walks where its fragrance can truly be enjoyed while providing privacy and screening. You might use a row of them to create a beautiful, hardworking windbreak or informal hedge. Place them at the back of a shrub border to deliver a wonderful backdrop to smaller shrubs. Win-win!
Because this variety is so cold-hardy, people work them into shelter belts and windbreaks. Those of you in cold areas might want to use them for snow fencing. Birds enjoy sheltering and nesting in the dense branching and pollinators will flock to the fragrant flowers. When you snip a few for your vases indoors, be sure to leave enough for your bees and butterflies…or just plant a couple of extras so everyone has plenty to share! Any garden becomes a pollinator and cut flower garden with the addition of a Lilac!
With pruning and training, you’ll even enjoy a lovely container shrub for smaller spaces and perfuming sun-drenched porches, terraces and balconies!
- Stunning Variety With Dark Purple Blooms
- Highly Fragrant & Pollinator Magnet
- Blue-Green Heart-Shaped Foliage
- Upright Smaller Sized Lilac Shrub
- Great Flowering Privacy Screen, Specimen & Scented Accent
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Yankee Doodle Lilac is hardy and easy to care for. All Lilacs only ask really for two things - full sun, and slightly alkaline, well-drained soils. What could be easier to grow? You'll get the very best flower display in full sun. Although it will tolerate some light shade, please consider planting it in bright sunshine as it really does prefer full sun. Once the sunlight is limited, you will see reduced flowers - so plant them where it is sunny and enjoy those deep, rich, fragrant blooms.
Plant Lilacs in moderately moist well-drained soil and enriched locations with ample air circulation. Fertilize in early spring and again in mid-summer with Dr. Earth Organic and All Purpose Fertilizer, following directions on the package.
Avoid pruning the plant at any time except immediately after the flowers fade, to prevent removing next year's flowers. Don't miss a single bloom! Follow these easy Pruning steps for the best flowering.
- Full Sun & Some Partial Shade
- Easy to Grow & Low Maintenance
- Adaptable to Many Soil Types
- Moderate Moisture & Mulched Beds
- Prune After Flowering
We're grateful for Father John's wisdom and persistence in developing the Yankee Doodle Lilac. Like so many others, you'll just love this magnificent selection. Order today and enjoy it! It will be shipped at the proper planting time for your area. We box it up carefully to ensure you are delighted with your new Yankee Doodle Lilac!
