Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Ensure this peony receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the highest bloom count and sturdiest stems. While it can tolerate a bit of afternoon shade, especially in hotter climates, too much shade will result in lush foliage but very few flowers.
  • Soil: Plant in rich, well-drained soil that does not hold standing water, as soggy roots can be fatal to peonies. If you have heavy clay soil, amend it generously with compost or plant in a raised bed to improve drainage and aeration.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply and consistently during the first growing season to help the extensive root system establish. Once established, Julia Rose is moderately drought tolerant, though consistent moisture in the spring is critical while the plant is developing flower buds to prevent them from drying out.

Pruning Tips

These intersectional peonies bloom on new growth that emerges from the ground or short woody stems. In early spring, once you see reddish buds breaking dormancy near the base, prune off any dead wood just above the new live growth. This "haircut" clears out old debris and directs the plant's energy into producing vigorous new flowering stems.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a granular, slow-release fertilizer with lower nitrogen and higher phosphorus (like a bulb food or rose fertilizer) in early spring. Avoid applying high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the growing season, as this pushes soft leafy growth that is vulnerable to winter damage and reduces bloom production.

Pretty Woman Julia Rose Itoh Peony

  • Exhibit Variety of Colors
  • Deer and Rabbit Resistant
  • Excellent Cut Flowers
  • Pollinator Friendly

Get ready for summer once this beautiful peony emerges from her winter rest. Julia Rose Itoh Peony (Paeonia x ‘Julia Rose’) is a remarkable Intersectional hybrid cross with a tree Peony and a herbaceous Peony with stunning single to semi-double blossoms.

Colors change from a cherry red bud, opening up to orange and apricot, with delicate purple flushed edges. They will fade over time to yellow. A single plant can exhibit 3 different colored flowers at the same time. Quite the show stopper!

Julia’s blooms can be up to 4-6 inches wide and expect up to 30 blooms on sturdy stems. You will not need to stake this plant. Enjoy the lush foliage and spicy fragrance. Julia will bloom for 2 weeks and at least 4 weeks in cooler weather.

Julia Rose is reliable and vigorous with a compact growth habit. Dark, shiny, green foliage keeps her attractive throughout the season. Deer and rabbit resistant but very pollinator friendly. Low maintenance rounds Julia out just perfect.

Julia Rose is ideal for any garden project. She is perfect as a specimen plant, in groups for borders and beds. Plant her with other varieties of perennials for striking color combinations.

Do not plant close to trees or shrubs as she does not like to compete for food and moisture. She will not do well with transplanting so let her stay where you plant her.

Planting in full sun with well-drained soil will allow your plant to grow to its fullest potential! Trim all of the stems down to the ground in fall after frost has killed off the foliage and the plants are dormant, and discard them to prevent fungal diseases from wintering with the plants.

Enjoy this beautiful peony from Nature Hills today before it's too late!
