How to Use Invincibelle® Spirit II Hydrangea in the Landscape
Several Spirit II, planted together, will form a stunning border in your yard. Use just one for a spectacular accent near a front entrance. Anywhere you place these is sure to draw attention.
Invincibelle® Spirit II Hydrangea is a deciduous shrub with a mounded habit. They can be used in mixed borders or cutting gardens.
Smooth Hydrangeas are native to North America. Give this special variety a place of honor in your landscape. They have been carefully field-tested for high performance and will bloom for you every year.
These make wonderful "Thrillers" in large garden containers. Try a contrasting pottery color like lime green, aqua, gold or yellow to make the flower colors really pop.
Or, go with a neutral gray or unglazed terra-cotta for a subtle charm. Keep containers well watered, especially in the height of summer as the blooms are developing.
Mass planting can fill wide open areas with bold color. Use a zigzagging planting pattern and space them 42 inches apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Unless you are in the hottest growing USDA zones, plant Invincibelle® Spirit II Hydrangea in full sun. You'll enjoy the strongest stems and most flowers with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.
If your summers are sweltering, you should plant in part sun. Give them a site that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. It should thrive on the east or southeast side of your home or structure. Use taller shrubs and trees as cover, too.
However, full shade positions are not ideal for performance. It needs at least 4 hours of sunlight a day, or the stems will be spindly and floppy. You won't get many blooms in full shade, either.
It is adaptable to a variety of soil types. However, Hydrangeas do need well-drained soil. Elevate your planting with a raised bed, or plant in containers if you have poorly drained soil.
Provide a moderate amount of water on a schedule. Good watering is especially important as the flowers develop.
In fall, before you put the hose away for winter, give your plant a nice, long drink. This is especially important when the weather is dry in autumn.
Although changes to soil pH will not be able to change the bloom color, apply an acidic mulch as a top-dressing for this Smooth Hydrangea. Use pine straw or pine bark to increase the acidity of your soil over time.
Acidic mulch will also help to keep the root systems nice and cool. Please pull mulch back from the crown of your plant by 6 inches for proper air circulation.
Invincibelle® Spirit II has minimal pruning requirements, and blooms on new wood. Prune each stem down by a third in early spring, just as new growth begins to emerge on the stems. Cut back at a 45-degree angle right above an outward-facing bud.
There is no need to remove the spent flowers or deadhead. However, regular cutting of blooms will give you wonderful material to create special cut flower arrangements!
Invincibelle® Spirit II Hydrangea is super hardy, and easy to maintain in the landscape. Order yours now!
