Suburban edible landscaping is a garden trend on the rise. Many people are re-discovering the incredible flavor of Old World and heirloom varieties. Here is a wonderful, unusual offering that features very special characteristics.
The cherished Indian Free Peach (Prunus persica Indian Free') is a disease-resistant tree that produces large freestone peaches. You'll have to do a double take when you see the harvest.
These white peaches are marbled with dark, wine-red streaks through the flesh. The streaks radiate from the skin inward and from the pit towards the skin. This makes for a truly striking fruit.
Imagine serving grilled slices with artisanal cheese and prosciutto! It's a marvelous presentation, and all this from your very own fruit tree. You will simply dazzle your family and friends with this amazing peach variety.
The flavor is where the sweet, smooth and juicy Indian Free Peach really stands out. It's described as a berry-like flavor with a hint of plum. You'll begin eating well when the fruit is firm-ripe and enjoy as it continues to improve as it hangs on the tree. The peaches reach a delicious 19 - 20 Brix (sugar rating scale) when fully ripe.
Indian Free Peach has won many taste tests time after time. Highest rated, this beautiful heirloom variety has been beloved since its introduction around 1869. Indian Free is thought to be a sport of the famous Indian Blood Peach, an Old World clingstone variety planted at the Monticello orchards of Thomas Jefferson.
Indian Free has a freestone pit, which pulls away cleanly and easily. This makes for easy preparation!
Enjoy these rare fruits in a myriad of ways. Indian Free Peach surprises most first-time eaters with its rich, sweet, berry-like flavor. Wow! is quite often the first words out of one's mouth after the first bite. Then, not a peep until they finish the whole thing.
Indian Free Peaches store well for up to two weeks after harvest. You'll be able to make the most remarkable preserves and late season pies. Everyone loves the fine, rich flavor of dehydrated Indian Free Peaches.
Add to a backyard orchard with other Nectarine or Peach fruit tree varieties as a pollination partner. With careful selection, you'll extend your season of harvest, too.
This variety grows very well wherever the chill requirement of 700 hours can be met. It's even resistant to peach leaf curl.

How to Use Indian Free Peach in the Landscape
Indian Free Peach requires a pollinator, which can be almost any other variety of Peach or Nectarine suited to your USDA Zone. Plant an early variety and a mid-season variety together with Indian Free for a 3 to 4-month harvest of fresh peaches.
Consider the other peach leaf curl-resistant varieties like the early season white fleshed Q-1-8, the mid-season Frost yellow peach or the late season Muir yellow cling, one of the finest canning peaches known. You'll have little to no spraying for peach leaf curl required!
Fruiting trees can be kept much smaller with an annual summer prune. Control the height and spread to your preferred dimension for easy harvest. Take a look at our Backyard Orchard blogs and YouTube videos to learn how to create 3-in-1 or 4-in-1 plantings.
Enjoy this terrific heirloom variety!
#ProPlantTips for Care
Plant Peach trees in full sun locations. Be sure to choose a spot that receives morning sun whenever you can.
The soil needs to be well-drained. If you see puddles long after a rainstorm, you'll need to improve the drainage. Create a mounded heap of soil 12 to 18 inches above the soil line and 3 feet out from the trunk, or plant in a raised bed.
Give a thick layer of mulch over the root system. Apply at least 3 to 4 inches of mulch, and spread it out 3 feet from the outside of the canopy.
In colder climates, pick locations with the greatest amount of morning sun and good air drainage for frost protection. Cold hardy Indian Free is hardy to zone 5b with reports of successful harvest in Zone 5a with good air drainage.
Don't wait, this valuable variety will sell out quickly. Get your Indian Free Peach trees ordered today!
