Fast Growing Ornamental Grass with Year Round Interest

  • Colorful Foliage and Flowers
  • Year-Round Interest
  • Fast Growing and Versatile
  • Deer Resistant

With the beginning of spring, Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' Switch Grass's blue/green leaves emerge with subtle red tips and increasingly transition to burgundy/red by autumn. By mid-summer it has sent aloft puffy, summer blooms of a reddish/pink hue that rise above the foliage on airy panicles.

The fluffy flower heads drift on the afternoon breeze as if delicate clouds, drawing the eye and enticing pollinators to come in for a closer look. Your yard's birds will certainly also take notice, sizing Shenandoah up for a tasty treat (as the flowers transition to seeds). Both the foliage and panicle seeds slowly adopt shades of grey and brown for fall, lending a bit of decorative interest to your winter landscape.

Your Shenandoah Switch Grass is an ornamental grass growing fairly tall, with narrow, upright nature. It is quite versatile, able to tolerate a variety of soils and conditions. Its hardy nature is most at home with moist soils and full sun, but can survive in dry soils, clay or sand as well.

'Shenandoah' would look lovely planted in mass in a naturalized area of your yard, but even just one in your perennial bed would be sure to draw the eye. They're especially useful for those areas where you'd like some winter interest.

When tall grass prairie covered vast areas of the U.S., Switch Grass was a vital part of the ecosystem. Versatile and able to thrive in a variety of conditions, Switch Grass has a long history of being valued by gardeners like you, if you order from Nature Hills today!
