The Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry bush (Ribes 'Hinnomaki Red') is an ornamental, fruit-bearing shrub that has so many different applications in the landscape beyond just its fruiting abilities! This superior Gooseberry cultivar, unlike other Gooseberries, will bear fruit for you the very first year and tends to produce heavily. Where other Gooseberries require sugar to sweeten them up a bit, Hinnomaki is naturally sweeter.

This low-growing, rounded Gooseberry bush stays tidy, so you don't require much room to plant one or several. Who doesn't love a low-maintenance fruit bearer! Your Gooseberry will produce medium-sized berries that have dark-maroon skin with faint green highlights and lighter flesh. Dangling among the lobed and colorful foliage, you and your wildlife will enjoy these nutritious fruits!

As if delicious Gooseberries weren't enough, your Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry will also delight your senses with its cute little white flowers in the spring, and dramatic foliage transformation to bright red in the fall.

Planting and Application:

Plant several in your garden for a bountiful summer harvest or just one amid your perennials for seasonal interest. Tall enough for great privacy and living fences that neighbors won't mind, or as rows along your home's foundation as an accent row and edible landscaping borders, backdrops and property division. Plant around your entertaining areas for a unique conversation starter! Enclose your kitchen and herb gardens with juicy healthy berries!

The tart skin and juicy, sugary flesh give the berry a unique tangy-sweet flavor that simply has to be tasted to be believed. Imagine picking some right off the bush, still warm from the summer sun! They're also great in pies, preserves or various other dishes.

  • Handsome Lobed Foliage & Russet Red, Round Fruit
  • Early & Heavy Producer - Harvest the First Year
  • Smaller & Low Growing
  • Spring & Fall Color!
  • Beverages, Pies, Preserves & Fresh Eating

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant your fruiting shrubs in full sun for the best fruit set, but Hinnomaki tolerates partial shade too! Provide a well-drained location with ample fertility and moisture access for best results. Your Gooseberry bush is hardy and disease resistant, so you won't have to fuss over it or use costly chemicals. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges if needed.

  • Full Sun
  • Moderately Moist Soil
  • Well-Drained Fertile Location
  • Very Cold Hardy & Mildew Resistant
  • Prune While Dormant

The Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry is a hardy, carefree producer of outstanding fruit that will also beautify your yard or garden even when not producing its high quantity harvest. Order yours from NatureHills.com today!

Great taste

I have 3 Hinnomaki Reds. The berries taste like sweetened rhubarb. Nice and tart tones with a background of sweetness. They do have some seeds (like grape) that are not something to be chewed. They are spidery, sending out individual stalks from the base. The thorns are thin and needle like. One can easily work a full grown bush without getting pricked by manipulating the flexible stalk at the end leaves to access the back end.

Hi Eric,

Thank you so much for sharing such a detailed and thoughtful review of your Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry bushes! We’re delighted to hear how much you enjoy their distinctive sweet-tart flavor—it really is one of the special qualities that makes gooseberries so unique. Your description of the seed texture and the thorn arrangement is incredibly helpful for others considering this plant, and it’s great to know you’ve found the best way to harvest without getting pricked.

If you ever want to try incorporating your berries into recipes, they’re fantastic in jams, pies, or even paired with savory dishes to balance richness. Additionally, to support healthy growth, be sure to prune in late winter to control bush size and encourage fresh, productive canes.

Thank you again for your wonderful feedback and for helping fellow gardeners feel more confident about growing Hinnomaki Reds. If you ever have questions or need tips, we’re always here for you.

Hi Eric,

Thank you so much for sharing such a detailed and thoughtful review of your Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry bushes! We’re delighted to hear that you’re enjoying the unique sweet and tart flavor combination—those nuances really make gooseberries stand out. Your observation about the seeds is spot-on; like grapes, they can be a bit firm but do add an interesting texture, especially for jams or pies. We also appreciate your insight into the plant’s structure and thorniness—that note about manipulating the flexible stalks is a great tip for fellow growers to harvest with minimal fuss.

If you’re looking to nurture your berry bushes further, providing consistent watering and mulching can help maintain their vigor, and late winter pruning encourages healthy fruiting wood. We’d be happy to share more growing tips anytime!

Thanks again for your thoughtful feedback and for taking such good care of your plants.
