The fig tree is a small to medium sized, deciduous fruit tree. The fig is botanically identified as Ficus carica and is also known as common fig or edible fig. The fig tree is grown throughout the world for its tasty fruit as well as an ornamental plant. The tree has fragrant, lovely leaves that can be nearly 10 inches long, deeply lobed with 3 or 5 lobes, and has smooth, white bark. Common fig trees grow wild in sunny, dry areas, and rocky areas, and can grow in nutritionally poor soil as well. Two crops of figs can be produced each year: the first or breba crop develops in the spring on last year's shoot growth, and the main crop develops on the current year's shoot growth and ripens in the late summer or fall. There are three types of edible figs: Persistent (or common) figs, caducous (or Smyrna) figs, and intermediate (or San Pedro) figs.
