Fig trees are grown throughout the world for their tasty fruit and alluring good looks. Fig leaves are deeply lobed with three or five lobes, which stand in contrast against the tree's smooth white bark.

It is a lovely ornamental plant, as well. Enjoy their fun and funky look and spicy fragrance all season long! Figs can be pruned easily to keep them at the right height for you.

Fig Tree Fruiting & Pollination

There are many types of Figs, and three types are edible. They are Persistent (common) Figs, caducous (Smyrna) Figs, and intermediate (San Pedro) Figs.

With the common Fig tree, you can expect two crops of Figs to be produced each year. The first crop - known as the Breba crop - develops in the spring on last year's shoot growth. The second crop is the main crop, and it develops on the current year's shoot growth, ripening in late summer or fall.

Fig fans praise the rich, mild flavor, and subtle sweetness that works well in many dishes. The fruit is outstanding for home preserves, canning, drying, or eating fresh as a healthy snack. The fruits feature sumptuous flesh and snappy edible seeds. Fresh Figs are a true Epicurean delight - soft and mild, with notes of hazelnuts and sweetness.

Figs in the Landscape

Figs belong in every edible landscape! Any way you use it, Fig can become a cherished specimen plant for you. The foliage and ornamental fruit definitely bring a high-end look to your landscape.

Figs are great ornamental plant, either in the ground or in large containers with good drainage. The lush, large, tropical-looking foliage can screen out ugly views for you. Low branches provide wonderful screening to block unsightly views. Use them very successfully as a wonderfully useful hedge.

Figs are also one of the best for containers grown as patio décor and can be placed "strategically" to boost your privacy.

Caring For Fig Trees

Common Fig trees can grow in the wild in a number of different areas. You'll find them growing best in full sun, dry areas, and rocky areas. They're also known to grow in nutritionally poor soil. This makes them an ideal pick for a wide variety of locations.

Prune in winter while your tree is dormant. This is one of the best to Espalier, a pruning technique that has been popular in Europe for generations.
