Luscious Tart Cherry Tree Is A Valuable Addition To Your Garden

The tart cherry tree, Prunus cerasus, is also known as the sour cherry, dwarf cherry and wild cherry. Closely related to the sweet cherry, it is native to Europe and Asia. The tart cherry tree is typically smaller than a sweet cherry tree and the fruit is crimson to almost black. There are several types of sour cherries, including the morello cherry and the Montmorency cherry.

Most tart cherry trees are self-pollinating, but if planted with another variety, they will produce larger harvests. When planted in well-drained soil, they are relatively easy to grow and maintain.

Tart and sour cherry trees are usually smaller in size than their sweet cousins. The fruit from the tart cherry tree can be used in a multitude of ways, from cooking with soups, pork and using as pie filling, to syrups and liquors.

Cherries are fat free, sodium free, and cholesterol free, are antioxidant rich and help boost the immune system. The cherry is a great source of vitamin C but also contains vitamin A, calcium, protein, and iron. Cherries are also a food source that contains melatonin.
