Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Aim for at least six hours of direct sun daily for the best color and density; this cypress thrives in bright light. Partial shade, particularly in the hot afternoon, is acceptable, but the foliage may be slightly less dense and the distinctive fernlike texture less pronounced.
  • Soil: This plant requires consistently moist, highly well-drained soil that leans slightly acidic. If you have heavy clay, incorporate a generous amount of compost, pine bark fines, or shredded leaves to guarantee good aeration—poor drainage is a quick way to stress out a Hinoki Cypress.

Watering Requirements

For the first year, keep the root ball consistently moist, treating it like a newly established foundation shrub. Once the Fernspray Hinoki is mature and settled, it can handle short dry spells, but it is not truly drought tolerant. Inconsistent watering or prolonged dryness, especially in summer heat, will cause the delicate inner foliage to turn brown and put the plant under serious stress.

Pruning Tips

Like most conifers, the Fernspray Hinoki only generates new foliage on the current, green growth, meaning you must avoid cutting back into older, bare wood. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring just before new growth begins, or lightly in early summer to shorten the tips. Think of this as a tip-pruning to maintain the dense, neat shape; cutting into old wood will not produce new foliage, leaving a permanent gap.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a slow-release granular fertilizer formulated for acid-loving shrubs or evergreens (like a 10-10-10) in early spring just as you see new growth starting to emerge. It is important to avoid heavy, high-nitrogen feeding late in the summer or early fall. Doing so encourages tender new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost, making it very vulnerable to winter burn and damage.
