Love this grass!! The lime green color is a show

Love this grass!! The lime green color is a show stopper! I get compliments frequently. Mine are in concrete, tall planters.

Hi Robin, Thank you so much for the kind words! Your Everillo Sedge look absolutely stunning, thank you for sharing a pic! One tip to keep them looking their best is to divide the clumps every couple of years as they fill out, which helps maintain that vibrant color and keeps the plant healthy. Only about 2 weeks old and looking good

Only about 2 weeks old and looking good.

Two weeks in and already looking good is a great sign with Everillo. Once it settles in and the roots get established, that bright chartreuse color really deepens and it starts to fill out nicely. Thanks for sharing the early update, Gunnar.

Love this colorful grass!

I had a top notch landscape architect design put in 32 of these in a mounded group back in 2020 in southern Ohio and they have done very well. The only problems come from the fact this part of our yard is the edge between manecured and natural so we get a fair number of rabbits that graze on the edge plants in the winter so they are always pretty short, not arching. We also get some other critter that digs pretty deep right at the edge of the roots on one or two so those a small and weak as well no matter how many times I add soil to the pocket. The coldest winters turn the plants brown and I am conflicted as to whether I need to shear the brown leaves off. This mass planted sedge has received many compliments. So nice to have such a bright hardy plant for an area with only dapped sunlight.

Dear MissyB,

Thank you so much for sharing such a detailed and thoughtful update on your colorful sedge grasses! We’re absolutely delighted to hear they have flourished under the guidance of your landscape architect and have become a standout, much-loved feature in your southern Ohio garden.

It sounds like you’ve faced some challenges with local wildlife and cold winters, which are indeed common for edge plantings. Rabbits nibbling the foliage can keep those graceful arching forms a bit curtailed—sometimes blush-resistant friends like rabbit deterrents or applying a bit of natural repellent spray can help encourage fuller growth over time without disturbing the environment. Regarding the digging critters compromising the roots, adding stone or chicken wire discreetly beneath your topsoil might dissuade digging without impacting the plants’ aesthetics.

As for the brown leaves after winter, lightly shearing the dead or browned foliage in early spring is a great idea. This will encourage fresh growth while keeping your mounded group tidy and vibrant, preparing it to receive compliments anew!

If you’d like, we can also send you some resources on natural wildlife deterrent options or best seasonal practices for clumping grasses that thrive in dappled sun. Just let us know!

Your garden sounds wonderful—and its bursts of color truly make all the care worthwhile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What USDA hardiness zones is Evercolor® Everillo Sedge Grass suitable for?

  • Evercolor® Everillo Sedge Grass thrives in USDA hardiness zones 5-9. This cold-hardy perennial maintains its evergreen foliage year-round in these zones. Choose a location with partial sun to full sun for best color development.

How tall and wide will this sedge grass grow at maturity?

  • EverColor Everillo Sedge reaches 8-12 inches tall and spreads 12-18 inches wide at maturity. Its mounding growth habit creates an arching fountain of lime green foliage that adds excellent texture to borders and containers. Plan spacing accordingly when designing your landscape, and shop Nature Hills for this compact performer.

Does Evercolor® Everillo Sedge prefer full sun, partial shade, or full shade?

  • Evercolor® Everillo Sedge thrives in both full sun and partial shade conditions. More direct sunlight will cause the lime green foliage to develop its golden amber hues earlier in the season. For the brightest color transformation, plant in a location with at least 6 hours of direct sun.

What type of soil conditions does this sedge grass need to thrive?

  • EverColor Everillo Sedge thrives in well-draining soil and tolerates both moist and moderately dry conditions once established. This adaptable perennial performs well in average garden soil with good drainage. Avoid waterlogged areas and amend heavy clay soils with compost for best results.

How often should I water Evercolor® Everillo Sedge after planting?

  • Water newly planted Evercolor® Everillo Sedge deeply twice weekly for the first month. This drought-tolerant perennial establishes quickly with consistent moisture initially, then reduces to weekly watering. Once established, it thrives with minimal supplemental water. Shop at Nature Hills for healthy, container-grown plants.

Is Evercolor® Everillo Sedge deer resistant?

  • Evercolor® Everillo Sedge is generally deer resistant, as most ornamental sedge grasses are not preferred by deer due to their texture and taste. The neon lime foliage and compact mounding habit make it an excellent choice for areas where deer browsing is a concern. Plant it along walkways or in rock gardens where you need reliable, low-maintenance color.

What is the best?

  • I notice the question "What is the best?" is incomplete and unclear. Could you please provide the complete question? For example, are you asking about: - What is the best location for planting? - What is the best time to plant? - What is the best companion plants? - What is the best container size? Once you provide the full question, I can give you a proper FAQ answer following your guidelines.

What is the name of this plant?

  • The full botanical name is Carex oshimensis 'Everillo', commonly called EverColor® Everillo Sedge Grass. This evergreen perennial grass features distinctive neon lime green foliage that gradually transitions to golden amber tones as it matures. Plant in containers or garden beds where its compact mounding habit can showcase the vibrant color transformation.
