The trees are beautiful

The trees are beautiful. My other Eastern Red Cedars I bought a couple years ago are really growing nicely. Very happy with my purchase. Thanks for shipping so fast.

Eastern Red Cedar tends to establish quickly once it settles in, so it sounds like yours are off to a great start. Good to hear the shipping was fast, too. Thanks for coming back, Jeanine, and for letting us know how the older trees are filling in. Enjoy watching this new batch catch up to them.

Eastern Red Cedar

The eastern red cedar arrived healthy looking and has well packaged. I immediately watered the root ball and planted the next day. I will review in six months to advise on its condition. It took approximately 15 days from the time I placed the order until it arrived at my home which I find unacceptable. A previous order from Nature Hills and a previous order from a competitor arrived with in a week of placing the order. The length of time that it took from order to delivery is the reason for a 4 star rating rather than 5 star rating.

Hello Robert,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughtful feedback about your recent Eastern Red Cedar order. We’re delighted to hear the tree arrived healthy and well-packaged, and that you promptly planted it with care—as those early steps make such a big difference! We truly appreciate your intention to revisit its condition in a few months and look forward to hearing about the tree’s progress.

We also want to sincerely acknowledge your concern regarding the 15-day delivery timeframe. We understand how important prompt delivery is, especially for live plants, and we're sorry this fell short of your expectations and previous experiences. Shipping times can sometimes be affected by seasonal demand, weather conditions, or regional logistics, but please be assured that we’re constantly working to improve our fulfillment process.

If you’d like, you can always reach out directly for an updated shipping timeline at the time of your order or reference specific shipping options that sometimes help expedite delivery.

Thank you again for providing such valuable insight and for choosing Nature Hills for your landscaping needs. We’re here to support you in growing a beautiful garden and are eager to delight you with an even smoother experience next time!

Eastern Red Cedar Tree

I Purchased it Aug 9 and received it less than a week later. The tree was beautifully wrapped, and well packaged. Very good size and in great condition. I have it in a pot outside and will plant it in the ground when it grows a bit. Very happy with purchase. I'm looking to buy some hedge trees also.

Dear Anna B.,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Eastern Red Cedar Tree! We're delighted to hear it arrived promptly, beautifully packaged, and in excellent condition. It's great that you’re starting it in a pot and plan to transplant it later—that’s a smart approach to give your tree a strong start. When you're ready to plant in the ground, make sure to choose a spot with well-draining soil and full sun for the best growth.

If you’re considering hedge trees next, we’d be happy to help you choose varieties that will complement your garden beautifully while thriving in your local conditions. Feel free to reach out if you’d like personalized recommendations based on your region or gardening goals.

Thanks again for your kind words and trust in us. We look forward to helping your garden grow even greener!

Best purchase here so far

I’ve bought a few trees this year from Nature Hills, and these have been the best. I bought 3 of these Eastern Red cedars for help with Chicago area winds. Two were in perfect condition. One had some die back around the bottom. That said, all three have grown at least 6 inches in a couple of months and seem to be doing great. They are tough little trees, so I think that has more to do with it than the nursery itself. I recommend these trees, especially since they are hard to find elsewhere.

I purchased four of these eastern red cedars from Naturehills a year and a half ago and they are doing great. They have grown substantially. Naturehills ships their trees very well packaged. Keeping them well watered after planting them is key in the dry climate of Colorado.

Great Trees

I standby my review below, but Nature Hills needs to grow more of these. They run out quick. They grow fast in central Texas and provide great ground cover for small wildlife with low hanging branches. However,i bought mine on sale at a reasonable price of 19.95. Anything more for the size of the tree sent is overpriced. I wanted more, but not at $39 a pop.

Hi Chris B.,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughtful review and comments about our Eastern Red Cedar Trees. We’re thrilled to hear that your tree is thriving in central Texas and providing a great habitat for local wildlife – that’s exactly the kind of natural beauty we aim to nurture!

We absolutely understand your point about availability and pricing. These popular trees often sell out quickly, especially during our sales. While smaller or younger trees are more budget-friendly, we appreciate your feedback on price perception for the size you've received, and we’ll certainly share this input with our sourcing and sales teams. In the meantime, since you’re eager to plant more without stretching your budget, you might find success with our “Helper Plants” or starter-size product line, which offer a great balance of quality and price, perfect for growth and future landscaping.

Also, keeping watering to a moderate level during establishment and periodic mulching helps Eastern Red Cedars thrive in your climate while supporting wildlife habitat, so feel empowered to watch your mini ecosystem flourish!

If you ever have questions about how to care for or propagate these wonderful cedars, please don’t hesitate to reach out – we’re here to support your green-side quests!

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast do Eastern Red Cedar trees grow?

  • Eastern Red Cedar trees are slow to moderate growers, typically adding 12-24 inches per year once established. These native evergreens focus their energy on developing deep root systems and dense foliage rather than rapid height gain. Plant in full sun for best growth rates.

What is the mature height of Eastern Red Cedar trees?

  • Eastern Red Cedar trees typically reach 30-40 feet tall at maturity, though they can grow up to 50 feet in ideal conditions. These native evergreens grow slowly but steadily, adding 12-24 inches per year. Plan for adequate spacing when planting, as mature trees spread 8-20 feet wide. Shop at Nature Hills for quality specimens.

How much sun does Eastern Red Cedar need?

  • Eastern Red Cedar thrives in full sun but tolerates partial shade remarkably well. This tough native adapts to harsh, exposed sites where many other evergreens struggle. Plant it in your sunniest spots for fastest growth and densest foliage development.

Is Eastern Red Cedar drought-tolerant?

  • Yes, Eastern Red Cedar is extremely drought-tolerant and thrives in harsh, dry conditions. This tough native evergreen naturally grows across North America in challenging sites where other trees struggle. Once established, it requires minimal watering and performs well in poor, rocky soils.

Is Eastern Red Cedar deer-resistant?

  • Yes, Eastern Red Cedar is deer-resistant - deer typically avoid this native evergreen. The aromatic foliage and tough texture naturally deter browsing. Plant it as a reliable screening tree in areas where deer pressure is high, available at naturehills.com.

Does it require pruning?

  • Eastern Red Cedar requires minimal pruning due to its naturally attractive shape. This tough native maintains good form on its own in most landscapes. Light pruning in late winter can shape young trees if needed, and you can clip sprigs for aromatic indoor use anytime.

Can it tolerate poor soil conditions?

  • Eastern Red Cedar thrives in poor soils where other trees fail, including shallow, rocky ground and areas with black walnut. This native tolerates road salt, air pollution, and drought conditions without issue. Plant it in your most challenging spots for reliable evergreen coverage.

Does it require fertilizer?

  • Eastern Red Cedar thrives in poor soils and harsh conditions without fertilizer. This tough native adapts to shallow, rocky soils and even areas with road salt. Skip the fertilizer and let this drought-resistant tree flourish naturally in your landscape.
