Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Apply this wrap to trees in areas receiving direct southern or western sun exposure. This protection is most critical during winter months when "sunscald" occurs due to rapid temperature fluctuations on the trunk.
  • Soil: While the wrap itself does not interact with soil, ensure the bottom edge is tucked just slightly above the soil line. If you bury the wrap in heavy clay or mulch, it can trap excessive moisture against the bark and lead to fungal rot.

Watering Requirements

Continue your standard watering schedule for the tree based on its species and age. However, check under the wrap periodically to ensure the bark is not staying perpetually damp after heavy rains. If the wrap becomes saturated and does not dry out, it can create a humid environment that invites pests or disease.

Pruning Tips

You should remove the tree wrap in the early spring once the threat of the final hard freeze has passed. Leaving the wrap on during the growing season is like wearing a winter coat in July; it restricts the natural expansion of the trunk and can girdle the tree. Reapply a fresh layer each autumn to provide consistent protection as the tree matures.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer to the base of the tree in early spring after the wrap has been removed. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers in late summer or autumn because they encourage soft, new growth that is highly susceptible to winter kill. Keeping the tree nourished ensures the bark remains thick and resilient under the protective wrap.

Trees are beautiful, but they need protection from scorching, trimmer and mower damage, and girdling. DeWitt Tree Wrap offers better tree protection than any other tree wrap on the market today. This Tree Wrap is made of polypropylene fabric and easily conforms to fit any tree shape or bark texture. It will last for years and slowly photodegrade to prevent girdling of the tree’s trunk or roots. DeWitt Tree Wrap is approved by leading universities and horticulturalists and can be found in our Tree Starter Kits
