  • Sunlight: Plant this shrub in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct light) to ensure the heaviest fruit production and the most brilliant red autumn color. It can tolerate partial shade, but the bloom count will decrease and the growth habit may become leggy rather than dense.
  • Soil: This plant is incredibly adaptable and performs well in a wide range of soil textures, from boggy, wet clays to dry, sandy locations. For the best health, ensure the soil is slightly acidic and enrich the planting site with organic compost to improve drainage and nutrient retention.

Watering Requirements

Maintain consistent soil moisture for the first growing season to help the extensive root system establish. Once established, Black Chokeberry is quite drought-tolerant, though consistent watering during the summer ensures plumper, higher-quality berries. Inconsistent watering during fruit set can cause berries to shrivel or drop prematurely.

Pruning Tips

This shrub blooms on old wood, so the best approach is renewal pruning in early spring while the plant is still dormant.
