Endless Summer® Hydrangea: The Original Reblooming Mophead Collection
Endless Summer® Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) revolutionized what gardeners expect from bigleaf hydrangeas. These reblooming hydrangeas flower on both old and new wood, delivering continuous mophead blooms from late spring through fall instead of the single flush traditional varieties produce.
Before Endless Summer hit the market, gardeners in zones 4 and 5 struggled with bigleaf hydrangeas. A harsh winter or late frost would kill flower buds on old wood, leaving nothing but foliage for the entire season. The Endless Summer collection solved this problem. Even after winter dieback, these everblooming hydrangeas produce flowers on new growth, so you get blooms regardless of what winter throws at them.
Endless Summer® Hydrangea Size and Growth Habit
Endless Summer Hydrangeas reach 3 to 5 feet tall and wide at maturity, making them ideal for foundation plantings, mixed borders, and garden beds along the foundation. Their rounded, mounding growth habit creates a full, lush appearance without aggressive spreading. For smaller spaces, Summer Crush stays compact at 18 to 36 inches tall and wide.
These hydrangeas grow at a moderate rate, typically adding 6 to 12 inches per year once established. Most varieties reach their mature size within 3 to 5 years.
Can Endless Summer Hydrangeas Grow in Full Sun?
In northern zones (4-6), Endless Summer Hydrangeas thrive in full sun to partial shade, handling 6 or more hours of direct sunlight without issue. In southern zones (7-9), morning sun with afternoon shade protects blooms from scorching and extends flower life. These are among the more sun-tolerant hydrangeas available, though consistent moisture is essential when growing in full sun locations.
The Endless Summer® Hydrangea Collection
The Original Endless Summer Hydrangea started the reblooming revolution with classic blue or pink mophead flowers up to 8 inches across. It remains the most widely planted variety and performs reliably in zones 4 through 9.
BloomStruck® Endless Summer Hydrangea produces the most saturated colors in the collection. Deep rose-pink to violet-purple blooms stand out against dark green foliage and distinctive red-purple stems. This variety shows excellent heat tolerance and strong disease resistance.
Summer Crush® Hydrangea brings the reblooming trait to a compact form. Bright raspberry-red or neon purple flowers cover this 18 to 36 inch shrub, perfect for containers, small gardens, and tight spaces where standard hydrangeas would overwhelm.
Blushing Bride Hydrangea opens pure white and gradually blushes to soft pink or pale blue as flowers age. Wedding planners and florists prize these blooms for arrangements.
Twist-n-Shout® Hydrangea is the first reblooming lacecap hydrangea. Delicate pink or periwinkle florets surround a central cluster of tiny fertile flowers on sturdy red stems. This variety adds textural contrast to gardens dominated by mophead forms.
Endless Summer Hydrangea Care
These low-maintenance shrubs reward basic care with months of continuous blooms.
Planting: Choose a location with morning sun and afternoon shade in hot climates, or full sun in cooler northern zones. Space plants 3 to 6 feet apart depending on variety. Amend heavy clay soil with compost to improve drainage.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the first growing season and when plants are blooming. Mulch with 2 to 3 inches of organic material to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Pruning Endless Summer Hydrangeas: These shrubs need minimal pruning. In early spring, remove only dead stems and faded flower heads from the previous season. Since Endless Summer blooms on both old and new wood, avoid heavy pruning that removes potential flowering stems. Never prune in fall.
Deadheading: You can deadhead spent blooms throughout the season to encourage additional flowers and keep plants looking tidy. Snip faded flower clusters back to the first set of healthy leaves.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that promote foliage at the expense of flowers.
How Long Do Endless Summer Hydrangeas Bloom?
With their unique ability to flower on new wood, Endless Summer Hydrangeas bloom for 3 to 4 months, typically from late May or June through September or even October in mild climates. Traditional bigleaf hydrangeas bloom for only 4 to 6 weeks. Deadheading spent flowers encourages continuous reblooming throughout the season.
Change Your Bloom Color
Soil pH determines whether your Endless Summer Hydrangeas produce blue, pink, or purple flowers. Acidic soil (pH below 6.0) makes aluminum available to the plant, resulting in blue blooms. Alkaline soil (pH above 7.0) locks out aluminum, producing pink flowers. Neutral pH often creates purple or mixed-color clusters.
To encourage blue flowers, apply aluminum sulfate, composted oak leaves, pine needles, or coffee grounds. For pink blooms, add garden lime or wood ash. Color changes happen gradually over a growing season, so be patient with adjustments. White-flowering varieties like Blushing Bride will blush pink or blue as they age but won't reach fully saturated colors.
