Foliage as bright as the sunrise in the spring and colorful as the sunset in autumn! The Golden Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Aurea') is a small, slower-growing deciduous shrub that will add so much colorful impact to your property that you will need your sunglasses at the ready!

Emerging in early spring with bright chartreuse to yellow foliage color, you'll be amazed at the brilliance this little shrub packs into such a small space! Reaching 3-4 feet tall and about as many feet wide, these balance out their smaller stature in sheer sunshine power!

Darling, pale yellow flowers cover the plant in little clusters beginning in early April, lasting through May. Like itty-bitty frilly bells, the bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will have your shrub humming!

The bright-yellow foliage turns to a lively green by summer, and if planted in partly shaded areas, becomes much more lime-green instead! Fall brings great sunset colors of yellows and fiery orange. Sometimes flecks of bright red splashing across the leaves!

Plus, autumn brings a few pinkish-red berries dangling daintily from each branch and drawing some songbirds in for a snack! These provide amazing winter interest, long after the leaves have dropped.

How to Use Golden Barberry In The Landscape

A tough and hardy dwarf, Golden Barberry is a definite knockout in just about any landscape! The bright colors throughout the growing season compliment and highlight every other plant and color palette.

Plant as an eye-popping accent shrub or in a mass planting that turns heads! The color is only amplified in the sun! That hard-to-mow slope or that awkward to reach spot in your landscape will become a beacon of shining brilliance!

A row or low hedge of Golden Barberry will make uninvited guests think twice with the small thorns along each branch. Though if you have overly inquisitive pets or small children, this shrub may need to be planted out of their reach.

If you have a container large enough, Golden Barberry makes an excellent, breathtaking containerized plant, becoming a vivid focal point anywhere you need that pop of color!

Golden also becomes an instant spotlight in your other mixed-shrub borders and adds that perfect flash of sunshine!

#ProPlantTips For Care

This type of Japanese Barberry bush does best when watered regularly and it does have an above-average moisture requirement. Preferring well-drained soils, Golden Barberry is not too particular on what type of soil they are planted in, just as long as they do not sit in water at any time! Once established however Barberry has some drought tolerance.

A generous layer of mulch over the roots helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill all season long.

Doing as well in full sun as it does in partial shade, you will see more color in the part sun areas but have more flowers and fruit in full sun. Winter hardy from growing zones 4-9, Barberry thrives best in the hotter climates with some afternoon shade.
