The Red Gold Nectarine (Prunus persica var. nucipersica 'Red Gold') has a name that says it all. Its fruit's flesh is golden and juicy contrasted with ruby-red skin.

It is about as low maintenance a fruit tree as you can get and it will last for up to 40 years, giving fruit for you, your kids, grandkids, and maybe even your great-grandkids.

Picture your Red Gold Nectarine in the fall--dark green foliage ornamented with red blushed fruit with hints of orange. It is one of the best varieties of nectarine on the market and was developed in the 1960s in California and produces large fruit with yellow flesh.

This freestone variety has firm, juicy flesh that will burst with flavor when you bite into it.

While people say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, your Red Gold Nectarine is loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals--so it too will help keep the doctor away.

Once you have enjoyed the sweet, tangy fruit eaten fresh from the tree, bake it in your favorite dessert, can or freeze it to enjoy later or make some delicious preserves to enjoy on toast in the morning with your coffee. But save a few to eat later because this variety lasts well in the refrigerator.

How to Use Red Gold Nectarine in the Landscape

In early spring, the branches of your Red Gold Nectarine smothered in fluffy pink flower blossoms, drawing bees, butterflies and hummingbirds to your yard.

These flowers make the tree a great addition to your backyard as a spring ornamental feature. Plant one as a specimen or centerpiece.

If you have a little more room, try planting a couple of Red Golds to create your own orchard. This variety is self-pollinating, but like many fruit trees, it likes to have a little company and will produce more fruit when paired up with a partner.

The Red Gold Nectarine tree is small to medium in size and grows at a moderate rate. It is hardy and will give you a good crop year after year. It winters well, tolerating temperatures down to 20 degrees below 0.

#ProPlantTips for Care

You will want to find a sunny spot in your yard or garden with moist but well-drained soil. Carefully water your plant as needed to establish your plant, and as needed during dry spells.

If you'd like a little more guidance, try using the finger test. If you stick your finger in the dirt at the base of the plant and find it moist, skip watering but if it's dry grab the hose and douce it.

We suggest adding a layer of mulch around the base of your plant that's 3-4 inches thick. This keeps weeds down, conserves water, and protects your tree's roots from the weather's most extremes.

Consider pruning your nectarine tree to promote larger and healthier fruit growth. If you'd like to learn more about pruning fruit trees, visit our blog on the topic!

If you haven't already added one of these fine trees to your cart, you need to do it before they are sold out. You will enjoy year after year after year of health-giving, tasty fruit.
