How to Use Buckley's Quill Mock Orange in the Landscape

This low maintenance plant has many uses in the landscape. As you can imagine, it's especially enjoyable when grown near a walkway, patio or driveway. Place it where you can enjoy its beauty and fragrance.

Soften harsh angles at the corner of your house with the sweet rounded outline of the Buckley's Quill. Use one on either side of a special Garden Room or grow several together as a fragrant hedge.

It shines in spring and holds its rich green leaves densely through the summer. Use it as a low screening plant. It also boosts springtime interest when planted on the sunny side of taller evergreens.

Add Buckley's Quill Mock Orange to a mixed shrub border. Partner with shrubs that shine in different seasons to create a year round display. Choose Viburnums, Rose of Sharon, Red Twigged Dogwood Shrubs. Add evergreens like Yews, Holly or Juniper. Use smaller Spirea in front, or pop in some of those rugged Landscape Roses. You'll enjoy blooms all season and have something nice to look at in winter, too.

Ideal in container plantings, use blooming Buckley's Quill in a high profile location. You and your guest will enjoy the fragrance during the spring and early summer bloom. Cut back after blooming to keep container plants short and sweet.

They love wind, so try them on the open prairie or on windswept hillsides. This durable shrub even tolerates salty breezes.

They are even pollution tolerant! Use these fragrant shrubs in urban plantings, as well. Try a long row of them across the front of a busy sidewalk for a friendly privacy fence.

For a solid hedge, plant them 2 feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. If you want an individual specimen plant, expand the planting to 5 feet.

#ProPlantTips for Care

This tough, disease resistant shrub requires little maintenance, is easy to grow and thrives in full sun to part shade.

You need to allow ample room for its arching branches, so be sure to read the Plant Highlights. Don't underestimate the growth chart!

Once the flowering is done, you can prune them back by up to 50%. This keeps a nice, clean look. You can do this hard pruning every year, or less often. Don't be surprised to see reblooming in mid to late summer.

They can handle a bit of shade, but you'll get the best flower display in a full sun position that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.

Mock Orange shrubs thrive just about anywhere, including slightly acidic, slightly alkaline, sandy soil, or in heavy clay. Although widely adapted to many different soil types, Buckley's Quill Mock Orange requires well-drained soil.

The roots won't tolerant wet locations, so mound up if you see puddles that remain long after a rain. It's easy, just bring in additional topsoil and heap it into a mound 18 inches high. Plant directly in that mound.

While Mock Orange does need a moderate amount of water on a regular basis, it's important not to overwater your plants. The best trick is to use the Finger Test. Poke your finger into the soil up to your second knuckle. Is it getting dry? Time to water. Is it still moist? Hold off for now and check tomorrow.

Once the plant is well established in your soil, it can tolerate short periods of drought, but not for long. Add a nice, thick layer of mulch all around to three feet outside the shrub. Wood mulch helps you plant to maintain surface moisture and keep roots cool. However, mulch should never touch the main stems of your plant. Once you've spread the mulch out, be sure to pull mulch back by 3 inches all the way around the main stems to give them proper air circulation.

The beloved Buckley's Quill Mock Orange thrive in many climates and scent the air so nicely in spring. And these vigorous shrubs are so very easy to grow. Whether you spell it Mock Orange, or Mockorange, you'll want to order yours today for a marvelous springtime!
