Truly remarkable, the Miracle Fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) is a mysterious berry on a beautiful evergreen bush! A lovely shrub to have in warmer climates, the fruit has a big secret! When eaten, it makes sour food taste sweet! The berries take away metallic, bitter, sour and unpleasant flavors, so all food is more palatable.

These compact and densely growing evergreens are vigorous and precocious growers, producing fruit in just a couple of years! The big pear-shaped leaves are densely packed, with the tiny white flowers hidden among them. Soon the berries form and are ready to harvest in summer through fall.

The Miracle Fruit's unique abilities come from a compound called miraculin, discovered by Japanese scientists in 1968 after local people in West Africa were seen snacking on the fruit. Tricking your tongue into believing that sour and acidic foods are instead sweet! Lasting a couple of hours, the berries themselves don’t have much of a flavor. They are a neat party trick, unique garden novelties, surefire conversation starters and gift plants!

Planting and Application:

Synsepalum can be grown as dense shrubs or pruned into tree-forms with relative ease! Reaching a good mid-height for a tree, they provide great shade and screening throughout the landscape and look beautiful when the tiny white flowers or the rosy drupes are accenting the branches. Grow one in a container or planter for northern climates bring them indoors for the winter!

Miracle Fruit berries are perishable and need to be eaten right away, or they need to be frozen or dried. But that just makes them fantastic for using in all your sweet desserts, ice cream and other treats, helping dieters and diabetics ‘sweeten’ their food without raising the glycemic index and adding sugar or calories.
