Fantastic male Holly, the Jim Dandy Holly (Ilex verticillata 'Jim Dandy') is a compact dwarf, non-fruiting male selection of the variety of the popular Winterberry. It is used to pollinate female selections of Winterberry so the females will produce an incredible fruit display! Your Jim Dandy is beloved for its showy, deep green leaves. In fact, Jim Dandy is not only considered hardier than other varieties but also relatively carefree!

The foliage has a delightful gloss that will draw your eye amid other plantings. The leaves later transition to purple-yellow hues for an additional, late-season splash of color in autumn before this deciduous shrub drops its leaves for the winter.

The tiny, white flowers are not very noticeable but they'll feed loads of pollinators, and do their job in pollinating up to 10 female Winterberry Hollies. Jim Dandy is a male Holly, so won't produce the lovely berries that Hollies are usually prized for, however, it's essential for creating those decorative berries on your female plants. It pairs particularly well with Red Sprite Holly and Berry Heavy Holly! Cold-hardy and easy to grow, these deciduous Holly grow in USDA growing zones 4 to 8 and are very low-maintenance!

Planting and Application:

With a plant height of 3 to 6 feet and a width of 4 to 5 feet, Jim Dandy Holly makes a great border or screen. Excellent as a hedge and foundation planting, these add year-round curb appeal. The glossy foliage makes for a wonderful specimen among your winter landscape shrubs and perennial gardens! Pair this male cultivar with a female and you'll have an outstanding decorative feature for a low hedge or border.

Plant a few in a naturalized area of your landscape or perhaps one at the border of a perennial bed where the winter color can pick up where the bright summer flowers left off. Winterberry's tolerance for soggy soils makes them wonderful for along streams and water features. Plant in low areas, moist wooded edges, and where the gutters drain! Plant around Rain gardens and that soggy area by the HVAC unit while hiding these more utilitarian areas of your property!

  • Attractive Foliage & Unique Fall Color
  • Deciduous Glossy Leaves & Purple/Yellow Fall Color
  • Terrific Male Pollinator Shrub
  • White Flowers Attract Bees & Butterflies

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Jim Dandy is tolerant of poorly drained soils and it is deer resistant. It will do well in part shade or full sun, light or heavy soils, and can even prosper in acidic wet conditions. It's even drought tolerant once established, so overall quite a hardy plant. Slower growing means low-maintenance and you'll not need to do much in the way of work! Lightly prune after flowering if needed, or you can leave it to grow naturally.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Well-Drained Acidic Soil & Highly Adaptable
  • Moderate Moisture
  • Prune Early Spring After Flowering
  • Cold Hardy Variety
  • Easy to Grow & Low-Maintenance

For eye-catching, glossy foliage and good pollination, the space-saving Jim Dandy Holly is a great choice for your landscape! Pair it with some female Hollies, and you're sure to enjoy the results.
