Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements

Growing Zones 6-9
Brilliant sparks for your garden and radiant green leaves make Green St. Johns Wort (Hypericum 'Mystical Green') really stand out in your landscape! Bright, sunny blooms have incredible yellow-green foliage! Also known as St. Johns Wort, each center has a spray of stamen and pistils resembling golden fireworks! Bursting onto the scene in early summer after many shrubs have already called it quits in the heat!
Shrubby and tightly branched, the bright foliage grows in a curious alternating fashion. In warmer growing zones, Hypericum may be semi-evergreen or even fully evergreen in mild winters! You'll enjoy brilliance for three seasons of the year!
Even if they do go dormant, the dense, mounded shrub retains wonderful features and character, plus its exfoliating bark provides intriguing winter interest. A tough native survivor, Hypericum makes itself right at home, even spreading out a little to form nice colonies! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 6 to 9 and grows to a neat and tidy 2-3 feet in height and width.
St. John's Wort is also a beneficial herb and has long been used to relieve everything from anxiety to inflammation. While we don't recommend using landscaping Hypercum medicinally, just the sunny blooms and the sheer amount of butterflies that arrive are sure to lift your spirits!
Planting and Application:
If you have a wooded edge (or want to get the look of one) Hypericum fits right in. Bridging the transition between yard and woods, taming the wildness, and filling an area with little rays of sunshine! Don't worry about those out-of-the-way areas attracting deer, those uninvited guests usually leave it alone!
Green brings a nice 'scruffiness' to formal beds as well as informal country borders. Hypericum easily complements your style! Mixed-shrub borders, back garden beds, and informal hedges are perfect for Green Hypericum to roam! Even large containers and planters will welcome the bright filler plant!
Your cutting garden is a natural place for Hypericum, and every florist is familiar with the name Hypericum. The unique, glossy-green seed pods appear in late summer and mature to a soft salmony pink. They're incredibly fashionable in cut flower gardens and in bouquets! Or, leave them to their own devices in the landscape for wonderful winter interest!
The spreading, suckering nature of these plants makes them perfect erosion control, on steep slopes and hard-to-mow areas, readily colonizing when planted en masse. Need to fill an area with sunshine? Plant a few Green St. Johns Worts and sit back and relax! The low-maintenance nature of these plants makes them perfect for erosion control on steep slopes, and en masse - transforming them into golden hillsides full of bees and butterflies!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Hypericum needs to be planted in full sun and a touch of part shade/afternoon shade (especially in warmer climates). Plant in well-drained soil for the best growth possible because St. John's Wort cannot tolerate wet feet! In cooler parts of the country, Green Hypericum may die back to the ground in harsh winters, but each spring, it will come back strong and true.
A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch retains moisture and insulates the root system from heat and winter's chill. St. John's Wort blooms on new wood, so prune while dormant to control the size and shape however, these really do their best in locations where they're allowed to be themselves. Don't worry about those out-of-the-way areas attracting deer, those uninvited guests will usually leave this plant alone. Drought and rust-resistant, these easy-growing plants are low-maintenance!
