The petite Citrus Dwarf Brown Select Satsuma Tree (Citrus unshiu 'Brown Select') is a Satsuma Mandarin Orange variety with sugary-sweet juicy fruit that's mostly seedless for easy eating. The medium to larger-sized fruits are firm and can be added to salads, and preserves and are wonderful for healthy sweet treats for kids! Mandarin are easy-to-peel yellow to yellow-orange gems!

The bright green evergreen foliage adds lush color to your pots, porches, and landscapes year-round. You'll enjoy the contrast of bright white blooms that appear in clusters and emit a heavenly fragrance that will make this tree worthwhile. But soon those blooms become juicy bright orange gems, typically ripening over the winter months.

Satsuma Trees are hardy outdoors throughout USDA hardiness zones 9-11. These broadleaf evergreens are lovely ornamentals in their own right, and their smaller size makes it easy to add one to any location in the sun! Northern growers can even enjoy these trees by bringing them indoors during the chilly months and using them as gorgeous patio trees throughout the summer.

Planting and Application:

Satsumas in the warm climate landscape can be lovely evergreens in hedges, privacy rows, and groups for screening. The evergreen foliage offers year-round cover while the smaller size allows for small-space gardening anywhere on your property. You don't even have to have a yard to enjoy dwarf citrus! Use on patios and balconies, or plant a pair to highlight your front entry.

Pot up in containers and planters around your seating areas and pools as tropical flowering accents. Mix among other Citrus trees or add to your tropical fruit orchard! Northern growers can enjoy container citrus in a bright sunny window away from drafts in the winter. Incredible as double-duty edible landscaping plants, Satsumas are beautiful edible landscaping plants!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Satsuma trees love the full sun and prefer lower moisture once established. Provide a location with fertile very well-drained soil with regular fertility. Prune after flowering if needed, but these smaller dwarf trees rarely need much maintenance. Citrus trees prefer slightly acidic soil for the best results. They prefer to dry out slightly between watering and despise soggy soil. Ensure containers have fast-draining soil mix and good drainage holes.

Protecting Citrus From Chill

Although Citrus can grow year-round in warmer regions (zones 9 and 10), they can also thrive in colder areas (zones 4 to 7) as long as the tree is brought indoors before the first frost of winter.

In zone 8, you can cover your tree in the event of a cold snap or unexpected overnight freeze. Citrus will need to be planted in a sheltered spot to avoid the worst of the chill, and not planted in a low area that collects cold air. If a spot like that is unavailable, or you are in a chill-prone climate, then you are safer planting Citrus Trees in a large, deep container with wheels to easily move them to a protected location or indoors when needed.

In cold growing zones, begin slowly acclimating your tree indoors in the fall, or into a protected location, eventually moving your tree inside. Indoor plants need a bright indirect sun window, greenhouse, sunroom, or enclosed patio for the winter. In spring, reverse this process and begin acclimating your tree to again be back out in the full sun all summer. This reduces stress and leaf drop.

Prune in late winter to open the interior canopy for sunlight and good air circulation.
