Rabbiteye, Early Mid-Season
Big is definitely better when it comes to the Brightwell Blueberry bush (Vaccinium 'Brightwell'). This is a classic rabbiteye blueberry, a blueberry type native to the southeast and southern states. Growing a whopping size, Brightwell has more real estate to provide more berries!
The best of the native wild Vaccinium ashei’s were collected and studied beginning in Florida in the mid 1920’s. Today, the Rabbiteye blues are the most sought-after varieties for the low chill regions throughout the United States. Brightwell has proved to be one of the top achievements of the prestigious University of Georgia program.
Widely grown commercially, it's also perfect for the home garden, Brightwell gives you loads of large blueberries that are packed full of juicy goodness. Your friends and family will be thrilled to know that you will be picking far more berries than you can use. (So will the birds, who will try to beat you to the bounty, so invest in some good netting!)
Your friends and family will be thrilled to know that you will be picking far more berries than you can use. Brightwell has reports of up to 10 pounds plus of fruit from one plant!
In regards to Brightwell Blueberry pollination, Brightwell is self-fruiting, so it doesn't require a pollinator to set fruit, but you will always get bigger yields if you plant it with pollination partners.
Give Brightwell a sunny spot with good drainage. It's not as fussy as other blueberry bushes and has few pest and disease problems Brightwell is also unaffected by late winter or early spring freezes better than most other varieties A bit more tolerant of less acidic soils, Brightwell Blueberry requires a pH of 6.0 or less to thrive.
