Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Patriot blueberries require at least six to eight hours of direct sun to produce the sweetest fruit and most vibrant fall color. While they can grow in partial shade, you will see a significant drop in berry production and a loss of the characteristic firm texture.
  • Soil: These plants require acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5 to thrive and stay green. If you have heavy clay or alkaline soil, plant them in a raised bed filled with a mix of peat moss and shredded pine bark to provide the drainage and acidity they crave.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy to support the plant’s shallow root system. Once established, provide about one inch of water per week, increasing this during heat waves when the berries are ripening. If the soil dries out too much during fruit development, the berries will be small and the plant may drop its leaves early due to stress.

Pruning Tips

Prune your Patriot blueberry in late winter while it is still dormant to avoid cutting off the current season's crop. Focus on removing about one fourth of the oldest, thickest canes right at the ground level to encourage vigorous new growth. Think of this like a strategic thinning process that allows light and air to reach the center of the bush for a healthier harvest.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a fertilizer formulated for acid loving plants, such as an azalea or rhododendron blend, in early spring before new growth begins. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers in late summer or fall. Feeding too late in the year forces tender new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first freeze, leading to significant winter dieback.

The Patriot Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Patriot') is beautiful and productive and is known for its large, round fruit. A little smaller than other varieties, this variety winters well, and the deep green foliage of summer turns from brilliant orange to burgundy in the fall, adding a beautiful bit of color to your landscape.

In May, Patriot will be covered with clusters of white bell-shaped blossoms, pulling in pollinators from near and far. This Northern Highbush produces large crops of big, dusky blue fruit with firm flesh and plenty of flavor! While self-fruitful, planting with other Northern Highbush varieties that ripen early and late season allows you to enjoy an extended of extremely nutritious, high-quality Blueberries!

This variety ripens mid-season and then again intermittently all growing season, giving you multiple harvests as your bushes consistently produce large crops for you and your family to enjoy. Once picked, they store well in the refrigerator, letting you enjoy them fresh for weeks. Add to your breakfast cereal, to yogurt, preserves, or bake in a pie or muffins.

Planting and Application:

Enjoy the beautiful fruit and foliage, but you will also be helping wildlife! Patriot is still tall enough to use as an edible hedge if you choose! The Patriot Blueberry Bush is an upstanding garden addition that will reward you with 3 seasons of beauty, food, flowers and fall color! Create delectable privacy with great fruit at your fingertips plus shade for your garden beds and borders. Use as backdrops to vegetable gardens or lovely foundation plantings, while filling your fruit bowl at the same time!

You can prune your Patriot small enough to tuck into large containers and planters on sunny porches and patios for gardening anywhere sunny! Plant multiple Patriots with other Highbush Blueberries in groups or rows and let these double-duty shrubs fill your garden with ornamental flowering beauty and superfruit that you'll need to fight the local songbirds for! For larger crops per shrub, plant multiples of Patriot Blueberry or combine it with other Northern Highbush Blueberry bushes.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Patriot Blueberry enjoys full sun to partial shade and organically rich acidic soils. Preferring moist soil, plant it where the soil is damp to wet but well-drained. Provide lots of moisture and fertility, plus a healthy 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch, since the shallow, fibrous roots need protection and insulation. Prune when dormant to control shape and size, and keep the interior open to sun and air penetration.
