Northern Highbush, Early Season
Earliblue Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Earliblue)' is one of the original successful crosses done by Frederick Coville Chief botanist of the USDA in 1911 and 1913. The results became the cornerstones of today's modern Blueberry.
The introductions from these early crosses continued long after Coville's death in 1937. The Earliblue was finally introduced in 1952. It was one of the first Northern Highbush Blueberries to be commercially grown. Earliblue Blueberry is long lived, living up to 30 years under optimal conditions.
The Earliblue has a wide range of adaptability in the colder climates and a wonderful flavor. The upright, compact habit of the plant makes it an easy to place into the landscape to add beauty and functionality to your yard.
It's best known for its medium to large fruit that is both wonderfully sweet and aromatic. Earliblue's fruit has a mild sweet flavor, is resistant to cracking and ripens uniformly.
Earliblue is considered one of the earliest ripening of the Northern Highbush varieties. This makes it a good choice for starting off your season in your blueberry collection. Include a few different varieties is container to assure pollination and a long harvest.
Although Northern Highbush Blueberries are self-fruitful, they will set better crops with other selection of planted close by. Always consider ripening times when selecting Blueberry plants to provide pollination and extend your harvest time.
Gorgeous, bell-shaped flowers bloom in mid-spring, their pristine-white shade hinting at a subtle pink as they dangle daintily below the reddish-grey branches. The glossy, green leaves provide a rich backdrop for both the flowers and fruit, and they transition to a lively burgundy-red for autumn.
The Earliblue is an excellent choice for container growing where its stately upright well-mannered growth habit will stand out. Like all Blueberries, Earliblue prefers acidic soils with a pH of less than 5.5. Don't forget to make sure that the potting soil use is acidic, or listed for "Ericaceous" plants like Azalea and Rhododendrons. Add soil Sulphur to stabilize the PH in the 5.5 or lower range in your container.
Blueberries have long been valued for their exquisite flavor but also for their nutritional attributes, and Earliblue Blueberry is no exception. Classified as a superfood, they provide some of the highest concentrations of antioxidants of any food.
