Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 4-9
This alluring, low-growing perennial will keep you looking! Add Sugar and Spice Foam Flower (Tiarella 'Sugar and Spice') to perk up your planting areas in the shade! Everything about this ultra-modern cultivar of the hardy native is eye-catching! Starting with the incredible spring flowers with a mild fragrance!
Hundreds of delicate blooms open along tall spires that reach high above the showy foliage. The profusion of lightly fragrant, bottlebrush flowers are displayed for a very long time. The irresistible pink and white flowers provide nectar for butterflies and other early emerging pollinators.
Study the dramatic, lacy green leaves that are adorned with heavily-marked dark centers and pointed lobes, much like Maple leaves! Their shiny appearance looks lacquered...and certainly gleams in the available light.
Growing easily and spreading into polite colonies throughout USDA hardiness zones 4 to 9, Tiarella can grow just 8-12 inches tall when in bloom, but spread to a modest 12-15 inches wide. Spreading by stolons similar to Strawberries, Foamflower, as it is sometimes spelled, will naturalize throughout the shady landscape.
Planting and Application:
Brighten up shade gardens with special Sugar and Spice Foamflower. Try planting this popular perennial with your favorite Lamium, variegated Hostas and Japanese Painted Fern for an outstanding color display. Go big with an en masse installation to brighten up even the shadiest spots of the landscape!
Use Tiarella as an effective groundcover to ramble between larger shrubs or Roses, or mingled in borders as living mulch or as edging! Keep them as delicious eye candy "Fillers" and "Spillers" in container plantings, too. Pollinators flock to the early blooms no matter where you include this lovely, under-utilized perennial!
Don't forget to use a few of the blooms as a cut flower in sweet May Day Baskets! You'll make everyone happy with this beautiful choice. Cottage gardens and mixed perennial borders welcome these little flowering ground cover plants, while the foliage in warmer climates can look great all year round!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Growing in full shade and afternoon shade in hotter climates and partial sun/shade areas in the cooler zones, Foam Flower does best when planted in consistently moist, rich soil that won't dry out nor become soggy. Not particular on type, all well-drained soils are favored! Top-dress the root system with a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch and/or compost to keep them moist and enriched.
No pests or issues, these tough native selections carpet areas in lush greenery fast, and all year long! Not high on their nibble list, deer and rabbits usually leave Foam Flower alone unless desperate.
These are herbaceous perennials that will die back in the winters in cold climates but remain semi-evergreen in frost-free regions. Gently rake through the clumps in the fall to remove dead debris and top with additional mulch or compost, then prune or mow back the carpets in the early spring. Easy to transplant, you can divide the clumps every 3-5 years if desired.
- Full Shade to Partial Shade/Afternoon Shaded Locations
- Moist, Rich, Well-Drained Soil
- Cannot Have Soggy or Dry Soil For Long - Especially During Winter
- Prune Back Each Early Spring
- Deer & Rabbit Seldom Nibble
- Stays Evergreen/Semi-Evergreen In Warmer Climates
