Hollies are the queens of the fruiting shrub world when ranked by ornamental value, and Magical Daydream Winterberry Holly is no exception!

Magical Daydream Winterberry (Ilex verticilata 'Kolcaroda') is a compact ornamental deciduous shrub with four-season interest! Glossy green leaves take on a coppery-gold fall color for added delight.

In winter, the heavily laded, fiery orange-red fruits cluster tightly all over each bare stem! Great for decoration in the garden or in the home for dried holiday decor.

These are female Holly and require a male Winterberry shrub for a pollinator. We recommend the Southern Gentleman male Holly, and one will pollinate several Magical Daydream. However, without a male pollinator, you may not see any fruit set.

How to Use Magical Daydream Winterberry Holly In The Landscape

Excellent as a hedge and foundation planting, these add year-round curb appeal! Their tolerance for urban conditions makes them great for along the roadside to act as a barrier between your front yard and the road.

Anchor your garden beds or soften the edges of a shed, garage or your home with year-round interest planted on the corners!

The berries alone in winter make Magical Daydream a wonderful specimen among your winter landscape shrubs and perennial gardens. So be sure to intersperse among all your garden beds and plantings to inject some fiery color into the bleak winter landscape.

Looks lovely along a fence to enhance (or hide) the view! Create garden rooms by planting a curved row of these impressive shrubs around a focal point, your garden seating or to highlight your beds and borders!

Their tolerance for soggy soils makes them wonderful for along streams and water features. Plant in low areas, moist wooded edges and where your gutters drain!

#ProPlantTips For Care

Winterberry care is incredibly easy. Thriving in its native soggy swamps of Northeastern USA, these of course will do amazing in your coddled landscape! Magical Daydream reaches a hefty 6-8 feet in height and equal spread and is USDA hardy in zones 4 - 9.

Loving the full sun and even some part shade, these grow best in average moist soils and even acidic, clay or soggy soil. It prefers wet soil but is adaptable to other conditions.

Birds love the berries, and Winterberry plants are deer resistant, so you won't have to worry about it being decimated by their foraging. Rarely bothered by pests and Winterberry Holly are very disease resistant!

You'll need a male Winterberry Holly variety to pollinate female plants in order to produce fruit. Your Magical Daydream requires Ilex 'Southern Gentleman' for pollination and berry production, so keep that in mind before purchasing.

Hardy natives, tolerant and easy-care, you won't go wrong with this versatile ornamental shrub! For amazing berries this winter, you will want to get the Magical Daydream Winterberry Holly planted right away!
