Island plantings surrounded by blooming perennials, a unique and low ground cover, or as a fascinating accent to rock gardens, Green Mound Dwarf Japanese Juniper (Juniperus procumbens 'Green Mound') is the Juniper for the Job!

Oh yes, if you've been on the fence about ground covers because they seem uninteresting and insignificant, we're here to set the record straight. Junipers are amazing additions to gardens and let us tell you why.

This ground-hugging evergreen grows to look quite a bit like a dense mat. Leaning in a little bit closer and you'll start to see the intricate pattern on prickly needles each branch grows profusely.

You also can't help but notice the gorgeous blue green color of the foliage as well! It'll accent the yellows, reds, and oranges in your garden extremely well!

Unlike some other junipers and contrary to its name, Green mound doesn't mound at all! In fact, it's known for its fantastic habit of spreading evenly across whatever ground it's planted in. No need to worry about an uneven, or really anything less than perfect, look!

This evergreen shrub is native to southern Japan and would look fantastic trailing down the sides of a Japanese garden-like water feature, or underneath a Japanese Maple perhaps? Who doesn't like a tasteful red against green contrast?

It's not often that this bush is bothered by wildlife. Deer tend to leave it alone for the most part so you can plant it in areas often frequented by curious critters sound in the knowledge that they won't bother it.

Another attractive attribute is Green Mound's slow-growing nature. Do you find yourself dreading the first signs of spring because it means having to dig out the old shears? Plant one of these Junipers and push pruning from your mind!

This specimen doesn't brown in the slightest during the fall, or even during the coldest parts of the winter months! Keep your own little patch of green all year long. It'll look stunning with a light dusting of snow covering the soft blue green foliage.

Lay the groundwork for an awe-inspiring cottage or Japanese garden with this ground-hugging delight. Order a Green Mound Dwarf Japanese Juniper from our expert growers here at Nature Hills Nursery today!

How to Use Green Mound Dwarf Japanese Juniper in the Landscape

These junipers grow low to the ground and skip the mounding many other groundcover shrubs experience. This makes them perfect for a multitude of different uses around just about every type of garden.

If you have a smaller cottage garden, you can plant Green Mound near a brick wall or a pathway to soften the stark edges stones sometimes produce. They're also a great way to accent the colors as well.

Plant them on inclines or declines to give a neat little pop of blue green. Plus, the extensive root system acts as a great deterrent to soil erosion!

The roots run deep and help keep soil in place but they won't spread as the branches reach outwards across the ground like other ground covers. That means you won't have to worry about this evergreen overtaking more than its allotted area.

If you have some evergreen trees in your yard, use Green Mound to bring that same texture all the way down to the ground. It'll also accent your more colorful plants. Add one or two in between different garden beds to add separation and draw the eye's across the entire yard.

Rock gardens are yet another place this specimen shines. Not only does the evergreen foliage contrast well with the smooth rock, but it'll also provide year round color where perennials take a break during the winter.

This Juniper's origins make it a lovely addition to Japanese Gardens. It'll fit seamlessly into the calming landscape next to Japanese maples or small ponds.

While giving your neighbors a tour of your garden, make sure to mention that Green Mound is originally found in the mountains of Japan. They'll be so impressed by the far reaches of your gardening taste!

Larger yards can also utilize Green Mound efficiently and effectively with a mass planting somewhere sunny. Since there's no mounding near the center of the plant, it's ideal for groundcover that never fades!

#ProPlanttips For Care

Green Mound doesn't ask for much in terms of care. Once it's established, you can just about forget it's there and it'll do quite well all on its own. Of course, there are a few things you can do to make it the happiest plant possible though.

When picking out its forever home, make sure to take into account how much sun the area gets. For the best results, you'll want to plant this shrub in full sun. That being said, it will also do well in part shade if need be.

Another key aspect of keeping the happiest plants is well drained soil. No one likes to sit around with their feet wet and Green Mound is no exception!

While pruning won't be strictly necessary very often, should you want to give this ground cover a quick trim, simply wait until early spring and grab a pair of sharp shears. Go ahead and cut as much or as little as you'd like, this juniper won't mind.

One thing Green Mound doesn't like is overhead irrigation. So as it's getting itself established, make sure to water regularly directly into the soil, not the foliage. Once you've had the plant a year or two, watering won't be needed very often as it's quite a drought-resistant evergreen.

For those of us living in urban areas or places that sometimes struggle with air pollution, this plant is perfect as it's not picky about overall air quality at all!

If you're looking for more ways to help your plant succeed, consider adding a layer of mulch underneath this ground cover. It'll make the evergreen foliage really pop along with keeping the roots protected and conserving water.

This is a Juniper that's so much more than just you're run of the mill low-growing shrub. Green Mound Dwarf Japanese Juniper adds spice and year round interest to all kinds of gardens. Order one or two of your own today!
