  • Sunlight: This vine thrives in full sun, meaning it needs at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily to maximize fruit production and sweetness. While it can handle partial shade, you will likely see fewer blooms and a less vigorous growth habit in lower light.
  • Soil: Aim for fertile, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic (pH 5.5 to 6.5) to keep the foliage lush and green. If you have heavy clay that stays soggy, plant your vine on a raised mound or add plenty of organic compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, keep the soil consistently moist (but not waterlogged) by watering 2 to 3 times per week to help the shallow root system establish. Once mature, the Issai is moderately drought-tolerant, but a lack of water during the heat of summer will cause the fruit to drop early or result in smaller berries. Think of the soil like a wrung-out sponge; it should feel damp to the touch, especially during the spring flowering window when moisture is critical for fruit set.

The Issai Hardy Kiwi blooms on one-year-old wood (growth from the previous season), so timing is everything.
