Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this hydrangea full sun, meaning at least six hours of direct light daily, to ensure the strongest stems and most abundant blooms. While it can tolerate some light afternoon shade, too little sun often results in floppy branches and sparse flower production.
  • Soil: Plant in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If you are dealing with heavy clay or sandy soil, mix in compost at planting time to improve drainage and moisture retention.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy during the first year to help the root system establish. Once mature, Confetti™ offers some drought tolerance, though consistent watering during dry spells keeps the foliage lush and the blooms vibrant. Without regular water, the flower panicles may brown prematurely or wilt in the heat.

Pruning Tips

Because this variety blooms on new wood, you should prune it in late winter or very early spring before new growth begins. Simply cut the stems back by about one-third to encourage vigorous new branches that are sturdy enough to hold the flowers upright. This annual "haircut" keeps the shrub compact and prevents it from becoming leggy or top-heavy.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a granular, slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering shrubs or roses in early spring just as you see green leaves starting to emerge. Avoid feeding after mid-summer, as late surges of nitrogen can push soft growth that is susceptible to damage from early winter freezes.

Large, lacy panicles adorn the Confetti™ Panicle Hydrangea(Hydrangea paniculata 'Vlasveld02') and feature branches, that when in bloom, can grow up to 5 to 6 feet tall! The tall, terminal cone-shaped blooms open white and quickly age to pink from the bottom up before turning into botanical tan-dried winter interest to finish the year! Light and airy from top to bottom, these are highly desirable flowering shrubs!

A lovely, rounded, green shrub in the spring, the summer is when the Confetti™ really shines! As development of the huge, panicled flowers, growing up to 12 inches on contrasting red stems emerge to turn heads near and far! These long-lasting flowers continue to bloom well into autumn and look fantastic swaying in the breeze, or standing tall in a slender vase!

The gorgeous appearance and lightly scented flowers make these great for cutting, for your own home-grown floral arrangement. The flowers dry nicely on the plant for winter interest or for dried flower bouquets. Panicle Hydrangea are hardy in USDA growing zones 4-8, these are very adaptable shrubs with few requirements to keep them looking spiffy! No need to worry your acidic soil will turn these blossoms blue either!

Planting and Application:

Plant them in informal hedges, as anchor plants for sheds or garages, as screening plants, or as backdrops for mixed shrub borders and perennial beds. Try them in large planters for an elevated screen or accent! Screen off your seating areas for privacy and help whisk the world away. Use as borders and backdrops to other garden beds and soften corners of hardscapes. One would look fantastic accenting the corner of your home or as a foundation hedge on the part shade side of your home!

You won't be the only one in love with your Confetti Hydrangea. It will also attract pollinators, like birds and butterflies, even a hummingbird or two! Groupings of these shrubs make fantastic woodland gardens and bird-friendly habitats while slowing wind and keeping out prying eyes. Woody Hydrangea are prime nesting and foraging shrubs too, offering plenty for your local songbirds!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Full sun brings the most blooms, but the Confetti Hydrangea tolerates part shade also, especially in warmer climates. Provide well-drained soil and keep watered as the blooms develop for the largest blooms. The easy-care Panicle Hydrangea is low maintenance, with pruning recommended only once a year, in late winter or early spring. This woody Hydrangea only needs to be cut back by about 1/3 reduction of overall size, leaving a somewhat rounded outline, for a nice form as it develops.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Moist Well-Drained Soil
  • Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Prune Late Winter/Early Spring
  • Low Maintenance
