Red Trillium

Availability: Out of stock

Nodding woodland beauties, the shy Red Trillium plants (Trillium erectum) are almost a rare sighting in the wild as they ramble about the dappled shade of rich forest floors and shady glens! The unique pointed petals form a lovely, solitary red triangle, backed by a triangle of burgundy-red-tinged sepals, atop a nodding stem, and backed by a trio of broad, pointed green leaves!

Trillium are classic forest wildflowers and can be found scampering about with Lady's Slippers and Jack-in-the-Pulpits beneath the canopy. Giving Trillium rise to many names including Wake Robin, Bethroot, and Stinking Benjamin which had many old-world medicinal uses back in the day. These tender perennial rhizomes bloom in the early spring.

Trillium bareroot rhizomatous plants thrive throughout the USDA growing zones 3 through 9 and gradually colonizing small areas. Individual plants grow 12-18 inches tall and spread 12-24 inches wide at maturity. Loving rich, highly-organic locations where there is plenty of leaf litter and moisture. Blooming 2-3 weeks, eventually forming a fleshy, berry-like fruit in the summer.

Planting and Application:

Red Trillium only bears a single, solitary flower per plant, so planting in groupings, swaths and en masse is essential to having the best display of these rare woodland beauties! Wind a row throughout a shade garden or along the moist footpaths of a heavily shaded backyard. Plant in clusters along a stream bed or brook and in dappled shade meadows to gain the biggest impact!

Early spring ephemerals with fall color, use these lovely specimens throughout a rain or bog garden, along brooks and ponds edges, or create a woodland garden that looks good enough to attract pollinators (and perhaps a few fairies too).
